There is only one word to describe the Orlando Magic season “drama”. On Monday the Magic fired coach Stan Van Gundy and parted ways with general manager Otis Smith. The Magic were a cirrus this season mainly centered around star center Dwight Howard. It seemed there were trade rumors everyday involving Howard. Then there were all the reports than Howard wanting trade then he didn’t want traded. Then towards the end of the season there were reports than Howard wanted Van Gundy fired. Well, if true Howard got his wish. He is only one still standing in Orlando. Magic CEO Alex Martins commented on the moves. “It’s time for a new leadership and a new approach,” Martins said at a news conference to discuss the moves. “We simply came to the decision that we were not on the right track,” Martins said those consecutive first-round playoff exits were “simply not good enough.” Martins addressed that dispute directly, saying “At no time during that time did Dwight ask me to ha...

Magic's fate now rests with Howard

Two months ago, Magic center Dwight Howard sat at a podium at the Amway Center, with CEO Alex Martins to his right and GM Otis Smith to his left, and reveled in nearly an hour of praise for his decision to waive his early termination option and stay in Orlando for one more season. Shortly after the announcement, head coach Stan Van Gundy blindsided Howard, the team, the fans and...

Stan Van Gundy's Firing Reportedly Not Enough to Make Dwight Howard Want to Stay in Orlando

Stan Van Gundy's gone, so Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic can live happily ever after, right? Not so fast. A report from, a blog operated by former ESPN basketball analyst Chris Sheridan, indicates that Howard still "desperately" wants out of Orlando. In fact, Howard reportedly "wants out of Orlando more than he ever did before in order to...

Dwight Howard wins – Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith are gone

It was just a formality at this point, but Stan Van Gundy is out as head coach of the Orlando Magic, as is GM, Otis Smith, according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel. Van Gundy spent the last 5 seasons with the Magic, compiling a 259-135 regular-season record, and leading the Magic to the [...]

Which Team Will Dwight Howard Play for Next Season?

The Orlando Magic cleaned house on Monday afternoon, making a couple of the most predictable moves in the history of offseason moves. The Magic announced that neither head coach Stan Van Gundy nor general manager Otis Smith would be back next season. Naturally, everyone assumed that this was the work of center Dwight Howard, but that may not be the case. Chris Sheridan reported that...

Au Revoir To “The Master Of Panic”

No wonder Dwight Howard hated him so much. Stan’s got serious handles! Look, I would have understood if they had fired Stan Van last year when Howard was posturing for it to happen. Dwight Howard is a top 2 center in a league filled with power foward’s trying to be something they’re not. But to fire him now – after the team (sans Dwight) played their balls off for Van Gundy...

Stan Van Gundy is out as Magic head coach, Otis Smith most likely next

We knew this was going to happen.  Hoopsworld breaks it down for us: In a much-anticipated move, the Orlando Magic today fired head coach Stan Van Gundy. The move follows a very public falling out between Van Gundy and All-Star center Dwight Howard, and may be aimed at keeping Howard with the team long-term. Sources close to the situation tell HOOPSWORLD that the team is...

Source: Dwight Still Wants Trade

Executives from the Magic are expected to meet with Dwight Howard soon and will accomodate his trade request should he ask for a trade.

Superstars need structure, not appeasement

The Orlando Magic didn't just bet everything Monday on the idea that there's more value in retaining Dwight Howard than in keeping Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith. The Magic also wagered that massive talent accompanied by an out-of-control ego outweighs order and leadership in the battle for an NBA championship. There are no easy answers when a player's greatness comes...
