MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota Timberwolves second-round draft pick Robbie Hummel announced in a tweet Wednesday afternoon that he will play in Spain next season rather than in the NBA. Hummel, who was the 58th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft and competed with the Timberwolves in the Las Vegas Summer League, has reached an agreement to play for Obradoiro CAB, a club based in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. The team's roster features three American players in addition to Hummel: Ebi Ere, Bernard Hopkins and Deron Washington. Ere played at the University of Oklahoma, Hopkins at Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington at Virginia Tech. Other than Hummel, only Washington was selected in the NBA draft. In a release on the team's site, general manager Jose Luis Mateo extolled Hummel's versatility and shooting ability. The 23-year-old forward is coming off a senior season at Purdue in which he averaged 16.4 points and 7.2 rebounds, but he missed all of 2010-11 with an ACL injury that pushed him from a potential lottery pick to a risky draft selection. It was the second torn ACL of Hummel's career. With the Timberwolves' improved depth, it's hardly surprising that the team wouldn't have an immediate spot for Hummel. He played decently at summer league, though his was hardly a breakout performance, and at the time believed he would get a chance in training camp to try to fill a role in Minnesota. This agreement to play in Spain does not end Hummel's chances of making the Timberwolves' squad in the future, and it might be the best situation for him to prove he's healthy while he regains as much of his former explosiveness as possible.Obradoiro CAB is part of the ACB league in Spain. After playing in the second tier of the league in 2010-11 and finishing with a 38-8 record, the team was promoted to the top tier last season and performed poorly, garnering a 13-21 record.Follow Joan Niesen on Twitter.
