Cavaliers-varejao-reacts
So here we are again. Another season, another never ending stream of talk about the Cleveland Cavaliers trading Anderson Varejao. It’s not surprising. Exhausting? Sure. But not surprising. Any time you’re a young, rebuilding team and you have a top level player in his prime, it’s only natural that there will be speculation about trading him. To many, Anderson Varejao is nothing more than an asset. That’s an unfortunate way of looking at one of the most valuable players in the NBA. Look, I get it. We all know top free agents don’t sign in Cleveland. The Cavaliers can’t keep drafting in the top 5. Eventually they have to start getting better. And when that happens, the draft will become much more difficult to add difference making talent to the team. That will leave trades as the primary way of improving the roster. So the thought is, why not trade Anderson Varejao while he’s still in his prime. He’ll never get more on the market than he will today. That’s true. All of it. Good, sound...

Counterpoint: Cavs Should Trade Anderson Varejao

This is probably going to make me unpopular.  But I don't care.  The Cavs have to trade Anderson Varejao. Plain and simple. I'm not going to even touch upon what's a fair trade or what he could bring back in a trade; that's for Chris Grant to decide. But after watching Varejao torch the Brooklyn Nets for 35 points and 18 boards, I made up my mind. Trade...

While We’re Waiting… Very Valuable Varejao

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. “Anderson Varejao scored 35 points and grabbed 18 rebounds last night in a loss to the Nets. It feels crazy to write that, because Varejao isn’t the kind of center you...

Cleveland's Struggles With Trading Anderson Varejao

The trading block is a beautiful thing in the mind of a basketball writer. Just remember, once you’re on our trading block, you will not be taken off until you are dealt. At least, that’s the perception. Until Kevin Martin got traded to Oklahoma City, I’ve seen at least 12 different trades involving him. Clippers backup point guard Eric Bledsoe has gain heavy trade momentum...

Tyler Zeller to return Saturday; Luke Haragondy out for six weeks

The Cavaliers announced injury updates on Friday for two bench forwards, per Cavs.com: “Cavaliers forward/center Tyler Zeller has been cleared to resume play with a protective mask. (fractured left orbital bone and concussion) Cavaliers forward Luke Harangody had a successful arthroscopic procedure on his right knee this morning at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health after experiencing...

Byron Scott says shorter rotation is Cavs’ “last resort”

With his Cleveland Cavaliers team struggling mightily on the defensive end and the large part of the abuse coming at the expense of his reserve unit, head coach Byron Scott still plans on sticking to his deep rotation, preferring his players focus on their individual efforts. At Thursday afternoon’s practice, Scott admitted that while he has considered shortening his rotation,...

Sekou Smith report: Cavaliers’ defense could hinder backcourt development

We know the Cavaliers’ defense is bad. But how bad in comparison to the rest of the league is measurable, and the measurement is ugly. Tha answer: very ugly. “When Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters combined for 52 points in a road win over the Los Angeles Clippers last week, we started to see some real potential in the Cleveland Cavaliers. Since then, the Cavs have lost four straight...

Cavaliers G Irving briefly leaves game with injury

Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving briefly left Cleveland's game against the Dallas Mavericks because of an injury to his left hand but returned to action at the start of the fourth quarter. Irving was forced out Saturday night with 6:54 remaining in the third quarter. He squeezed his hand and walked to the bench where he was examined by trainer Max Benton during a timeout. The two...

Cavaliers' C Zeller returns

Cavaliers rookie center Tyler Zeller has returned after missing four games with a fractured left orbital bone and a concussion. Zeller, who is averaging 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, entered Saturday night's game against Dallas with 5:54 remaining in the first quarter. He was wearing a mask to protect the broken bone. Zeller was elbowed in the face by Los Angeles Clippers center...

Kyrie Irving Pokes Fun at ‘Cinematic Dunks’ in Foot Locker Commercial (Video)

Basketball shoe commercials are so unimaginative nowadays. Nowadays the “cinematic dunk” has become an overused trope in advertisements. Cue up a player dunking in front of a camera with a high frame rate, and you’re practically halfway to a Nike spot. And Kyrie Irving has had enough of it. In a recent Foot Locker ad, the Cavaliers point guard expresses his displeasure with...

Zeller returns to Cavs as masked man

Doctors have cleared Cleveland forward/center Tyler Zeller to return after suffering a fractured left orbital bone and a concussion, the Cavaliers announced. Zeller will wear a protective mask Saturday night when the Cavs (2-6) play Dallas. The rookie was injured Nov. 5 in Los Angeles when he took an errant elbow that left him with a fractured cheekbone, a black eye and swollen...

Cavs may seek help for bench bunch

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Dont think the Cavaliers bench woes are a big secret around these parts. The coach, his assistants and the players are all well aware. If I said I had the right pieces from the bench standpoint, Id be lying, said Cavs coach Byron Scott. Statsitically, the bench isnt awful. It actually outscored Oklahoma Citys bench (29-22) in a road loss earlier this week...

POTD 11/13/12: Anderson Varejao on Kris Humphries

About the only thing Anderson Varejao didn’t do yesterday was win.  As his Cavaliers got dismantled in Brooklyn, Varejao (along with his teammate Kyrie Irving, who scored a career-high 34 points) refused to go down without a fight.  By the time the final buzzer put an end to his boisterous 37-minute outing, Varejao had scored 35 points, collected 18 rebounds, doled out 3 assists...

Byron Scott questions Cavs’ passion and competitiveness in latest loss

Anderson Varejao. Daniel Gibson. Alonzo Gee. These three names would be the only ones that a visually preturbed Scott would list off following his team’s recent loss to the Brooklyn Nets, one which included a solid first quarter coupled with three quarters of defense that would best replicate that of the All-Star game or an And1 mixtape. A young roster, full of upside and excitement...

Box Score: Mavericks 103, Cavaliers 95

The Cavaliers focused on defense for the last three days in practice, but they still allowed 100+ points and 50+% shooting as the Mavericks used a late run to pull away from the Cavaliers 103-95, led by O.J. Mayo’s 19 point effort. Chris Kaman outplayed Anderson Varejao with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 blocks, while Darren Collison and Vince Carter each added 14 points. For the...

Lack of Talent..Trade an All Star!

Any financial planner worth his salt would caution you to diversify and would advise that the worst thing you can do is try to time the market.  I happen to agree.  I believe trying to construct an NBA team in OKC’s image under the new CBA is the NBA version of trying to time the market.  When you really think about it it really is a crap shoot.  Be bad, hit on your...
