I said it before the NBA Draft and this is what I honestly feel. New Utah Jazz point guard Trey Burke is one of the few players coming into the league where I think you can be pretty sure of what you’re going to get. Is he the next superstar point guard that will be a franchise changing player? No, probably not. But can he be a productive, floor general for a team looking for a leader? Absolutely. When you talk about the ceiling for Burke, I’ve likened him to a poor man’s Chris Paul. Is he CP3? No of course not. But I’d be lying if I said that watching a diminutive guard lead his Michigan team to the NCAA Title game didn’t remind me of Paul in some ways. Even Burke himself told me at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago that Paul is who he thinks his game is most similar to. Burke isn’t short on confidence which might be the biggest similarity he has to the NBA’s best point guard. So these comments at his introductory press conference for the Utah Jazz shouldn’t be that much of a surprise. “If they asked me, I think I can be an All-Star in the league someday,” Burke told reporters. “That’s just my opinion.” Only time will tell if Burke is right. One thing I do know though, is the Jazz became all the more interesting to watch with the addition of just one player.
