After the dust had settled from the Cavaliers most recent ten-point loss, this time at the hands of the Chicago Bulls, the team’s locker room was desolate. Dion Waiters was long gone, having left shortly after the buzzer, walking boot and all. Not far behind was Kyrie Irving, bright red backpack slung over his shoulders — the starting backcourt remaining injured, allowing for considerable less post-game prep time prior to heading out on their respective evenings. Kevin Jones, the recently promoted power forward who represents the other end of the Cavaliers’ totem pole, donned a backpack a few shades lighter than Irving’s, providing a nice compliment to the baby stroller provided to him through the rookie hazing process. While team communications folks, various coaches and a cavalcade of equipment managers scurried about, the two players who would remain in the wake were Anderson Varejao and Daniel “Boobie” Gibson — coincidentally, the only two men who were in Cleveland when the team...

Off night for Varejao spells misery for Cavs

When Anderson Varejao doesnt get a double-double, the Cavaliers dont stand a chance. Thats the story of this Cavs season, and it cannot be argued. And anyone who saw the Cavs 91-73 loss at Minnesota on Friday is giving a hearty amen. Today, opponents are understandably doing something against the Cavs theyve never really done before. Today, opponents are game-planning for Varejao...

Anderson Varejao is in Hall of Fame company this season

Anderson Varejao is averaging 15.2 points and 15.4 rebounds per game heading into tonight's matchup with the Chicago Bulls.  He's also shooting 52.2 percent from the floor overall and 77.7 percent from the free throw line. To that point, Dave Wooley (@dwooley81) emailed me the following statistic. The players who have averaged at least 15 points and...

Could Anderson Varejao end up in Boston?

Teammates Soon? Anderson Varejao is one of the polarizing players, you love when he plays for your team but hate when he plays for the other guys. I personally am of the latter; I could never stand the guy. Just the way the Side-Show-Bob-look-alike plays grinds my gears and when Benedict LeBron was still in Cleveland, they were a match made in heaven. The flopping, the whining...

Cavaliers (4-15) at Timberwolves (8-9)

OPENING TIP Anderson Varejao leads the NBA in rebounding at 15.4 per game. Hes recorded 10 straight double-doubles. Hes recorded 10 straight games of at least 15 rebounds. More precisely, in the previous 10 games, Varejao is averaging 17.4 rebounds per game. In the Cavs four wins, hes at 18.8 rpg. On top of that, Varejao is the Cavs top scorer (15.0 ppg) and arguably their best...

Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters out against Bulls

Cavaliers rookie guard Dion Waiters is out for Wednesday night's game against the Chicago Bulls because of a sprained left ankle. Waiters, taken with the No. 4 pick in this year's draft, was injured in Saturday's double-overtime loss to Portland. He didn't play in Monday's game against Detroit and it's uncertain when he will return. Waiters is averaging 15...

Our Ultimate NBA Dream Team

We’re in Atlanta this week, which means we’re lucky enough to stay with our man ***** of a friend (just follow his live-tweeting of Match dates as evidence) who also happens to work for a big-time NBA media company who hooks him up with tickets all the time. So of course, he tells me to get my ass down to Atlanta before last night’s nationally-televised game between the Hawks...

Cavaliers Injury News: Kyrie Irving Could Practice in a Couple Weeks

Kyrie Irving, one of the bright spots in the darkness that is the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been sidelined since breaking his finger.  He was the Cavaliers leading scorer at the time of the injury, and his absence has been difficult for the team to overcome.  Luckily, Irving may not be out for too much longer. Irving has been practicing, but only in non-contact practices.  As...

Reality sets in as Cavaliers fall without Irivng, Waiters

“To be honest I do not think you can make up for it.” — Byron Scott, 12/3/12 It wasn’t all that long ago when a Cavaliers-Pistons match-up was must-watch television. If you need proof, just ask Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell, Anderson Varejao or Daniel Gibson — the only four men to play in the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals who happen to still be playing for their respective...

Cavaliers Film Room: The Syracuse Kid

In last week’s Cavaliers Film Room, we broke down three end-game scenarios where the Cavaliers failed to execute in close losses. This week, we’ll focus on the team’s rookie shooting guard, Dion Waiters. We’ve seen some brilliant performances from Dion even in the absence of his playmaking partner in the backcourt, Kyrie Irving. On the other hand, there have been some incredibly...

NBA Rookie Rankings: Lillard, MKG take home Rookie of the Month honors

With the Cavaliers having two rookies playing prominent minutes, WFNY thought it would beneficial to see how the fresh meat around the league is faring in comparison with the Cavalier rookies. Each week, we’ll have NBA rookie power rankings where we’ll rack and stack the freshman class of the NBA. The rankings will be weighted with the most recent games carrying the most importance...

Bulls-Cavaliers Preview

Kyrie Irving's absence caused enough headaches for the Cleveland Cavaliers well before having to contend with a hobbled Dion Waiters. Beating the Chicago Bulls has been a challenging chore no matter who is in the lineup. Waiters may miss a second straight game as Cleveland looks to avoid a 10th consecutive loss to visiting Chicago on Wednesday night. Cleveland (4-14) is 2...

Pistons-Cavaliers Preview

Kyrie Irving won't be able to help. Rookie guard Dion Waiters wishes he could, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. Likely missing their top two scorers for a fourth consecutive game, the host Cavaliers will look to snap a four-game losing streak Saturday night when they face the Detroit Pistons for the second time in six days. Out the last 10 games with...

Cavs Report: Leuer to D-League; Waiters out

The Cavaliers have assigned forward Jon Leuer to the Canton Charge, the Cavs D-League affiliate. Leuer is a 6-foot-10 forward who was signed by the Cavs prior to the season. He was waived by Houston in July. Leuer has played in five games with the Cavs, compiling averages of 3.2 points and 2.0 rebounds. The Cavs (4-15) are at Minnesota on Friday, before returning to Quicken Loans...

The Cavaliers Continue to Grind Through Injuries

Is it better to play poorly and win or to play well and lose? The Cleveland Cavaliers (4-14, 13th in the East) have lost quite a few games I’m not sure they deserved to lose this season. The Cavaliers are going through something of an identity crisis at the moment. Or they are a pretty good bad team, or a pretty bad good team? One of the games they most certainly deserved to lose...
