After signing Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson to multi-year contracts, filling their need for a younger backup point guard and a wing to replace Matt Barnes, and matching the offer sheet the Chicago Bulls signed restricted free agent shooting guard J.J. Redick too, the Magic have nearly completed their offseason. They have lost no significant contributors and have had a successful offseason despite being overshadowed by the moves of their in-state rival.
Of course the Magic could still make some moves. There are some fairly big fish out there who could still be traded and the Magic do have some assets but as of right now, it looks like Orlando’s rotation payers are all with the team at this point in time.
However, that does not mean Orlando’s offseason is complete.
Friday, Otis Smith told the media the team still had to find a third point guard. Last year, the team carried Anthony Johnson as their third point guard. The Magic have expressed interest in bringing back Jason Williams. Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel has thrown around names such as former Magic players Carlos Arroyo, Travis Diener, Keyon Dooling, Chris Quinn and Earl Watson in addition to Williams and Johnson.
Some of those players are good fits and I really like that half of these players are very familiar with the system, but I’d prefer more of a developmental guy. There is of course another school of thought that says you need a veteran guy because it’s likely he’ll have to play given Jameer Nelson’s injury history. That’s something we’ll get into later in the week.
The Magic would also like to add another wing player and I’d assume that job is second round pick Stanley Robinson’s to lose. Ben Q. Rock of Orlando Pinstriped Post asked Otis Smith about Robinson’s status and Smith said that his potential roster spot will “depend on (training) camp.”
After the jump, you can see a breakdown of the roster.
