Cavaliers-varejao-reacts
While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. “At his current pace (and if he stays healthy), Varejao would finish the season with about 1,222 rebounds. That would destroy the Cavaliers’ single season record, which was set in 1975-76 when Jim Brewer grabbed 891 boards. Carlos Boozer holds the single season team record for rebounding average at 11.4 RPG. And while he still has a long way to go, if he were to surpass the 1,200 rebound mark this season, that would put him in elite company. There have only been 76 seasons of 1,200+ rebounds in NBA history. Wilt Chamberlain accounted for 13 of them. In fact, if you exclude Chamberlain and Bill Russell, there have only been 51 occasions in which a player grabbed at least 1,200 boards in a season. Perhaps most impressively, it hasn’t been done since Dennis Rodman grabbed 1,201 in 1997-98.” [Mayer/Rebuilding Since 1964] —- “I took one of my college friends to her first NFL game: Browns v. Ravens. We weren’t drinking, swearing, or doing anything remotely offensive—actually quite in contrast to many of the groups around us. In the 4th quarter, we had the Ravens pinned back inside their own 10-yard line. The Browns players were raising their arms in the air, trying to get fans to stand up and make some noise to pressure Flacco and deafen the offense. We stood up, for the first time during a play the entire game. We subsequently got screamed at to sit down by a man the row behind us. It was seriously the loudest I have ever had someone yell at me, due in part to this guy’s mouth being literally only a foot from my head.” [Schilling/CShills] —- “Tristan Thomspon wasn’t impressive. Marcin Gortat and Luis Scola are a solid post duo, but they looked like Sampson and Olajuwon when defending Tristan down low. He has no offensive repertoire to speak of. Tigger shot 1-7 from the field for 5 points, and had no blocks or steals. However, I’d like to point out that he shot 3-4 from the free throw line. That’s not bad at all.” [Socher/Cavs the Blog] —- “Dynamic quarterback-turned-running back Denard Robinson gashed the Silver Bullets for 124 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown run, in the first half alone. But after the break, things changed dramatically for Michigan. “We challenged them at halftime,” Fickell said. “All year, our thing was not to give up big plays, and that’s what we did in the first half. We were able to make adjustments and settle in. I thought we played one of our best games defensively in the second half.” Meyer’s message to his defensive staff at halftime was to stop the quarterback run. Robinson was limited to minus-2 rushing yards in the second half. The Wolverines, excluding Robinson, had minus-14 rushing yards for the game as team. Ohio State also created three of Michigan’s four turnovers in the second half. The backbreaker came with under five minutes left when CJ Barnett intercepted quarterback Devin Gardner. From there, Ohio State ran out the clock.” [Rowland/Eleven Warriors] —- “Brandon Weeden, for example, caught some grief for the way he played — after he had completed 17-of-26. Weeden’s final passer rating in the Browns win was 78.7. Which doesn’t sound great — until perspective is applied. In the previous five games before facing the Browns, the Steelers had played the Bengals, Redskins, Giants, Chiefs and Ravens — which means they faced Andy Dalton, Robert Griffin III, Eli Manning, Matt Cassell and Joe Flacco. None had a rating higher than Weeden’s” [McManamon/The OBR]
