“What makes this almost ridiculous to me is that Byron doesn’t even know who will be on his team next year. Say lightning strikes twice and the Cavaliers end up with Anthony Davis or Micheal Kidd-Gilchrist for crying out loud, they could be a 6-seed possibly. Even if they ended up with Bradley Beal or Harrison Barnes, I see no reason why they can’t at least compete for playoffs. Why could they not at least have the same goal that they did for most of this past season with Anthony Parker as the starting two-guard and Ryan Hollins getting rotational minutes? I’m not asking anybody to go Joe Namath on a playoff run next season, just don’t tell me it’s impossible quite yet. There’s no reason for that.” [Bowers/Stepien Rules]

“Overall, we were pretty close actually. I’ll admit that I was more pessimistic that I should have been. Apart from John, we all came up short on the amount of wins. I can’t speak for the other guys right now, but I figure that is mostly due to the fact that Kyrie Irving blew my expectations out of the water. I never expected him to post a PER over 20. He was sensational and if he had not been hurt, my prediction would have looked even worse. Seeing as we didn’t account for possible injuries, I’d say that I was even farther off than five games. If Anderson Varejao hadn’t missed the majority of the season, this team probably wins closer to 26 games. I was wrong in the preseason and I’ll be wrong again. Let’s see how other NBA writers and analysts did. Scott Sargent from WFNY almost nailed it, by predicting that the Cavs would finished 22-44. Unfortunately, his prediction was ruined by the fact that he also predicting Omri Casspi would lead the team in scoring. That was just so wrong. So so wrong. It’s okay — it happens to the best of us, Scott.” [Kaczmarek/Fear the Sword]

“Remember last summer, when Grant promised the Cavs would have two really good rookies in Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson, the right coach in Byron Scott, and lots of salary-cap room this offseason? Well, guess what? The GM was right.

Grant never takes any credit himself, but he could have thrown in his knack for plucking talent from the D-League, too. That may not seem like much, but it’s important — as teams suffer injuries and need quick stop-gaps every year. You also have to applaud Grant and his scouting staff for their work in the draft. Irving is everyone’s pick for Rookie of the Year and a future All-Star point guard. Thompson may not ever be a star, but he put together the best first season of any big man in his rookie class.” [Amico/FSO]
