MINNEAPOLIS -- The Derrick Williams experiment is set to continue for at least another two years. Or, the Timberwolves hope, it will end all together and the enigma of a highly-touted swingman can produce some favorable results. A team spokesman confirmed Tuesday that Minnesota will pick up the 6.3 million option on his contract for 2014-15. The Timberwolves had until Oct. 31 to make a decision, but Williams spoke Tuesday morning with president of basketball operations Flip Saunders and will meet with him Friday to finalize the deal. Saunders is currently out of town scouting. Drafted second overall in 2011, Williams' first two years in the league weren't exactly sterling. Bouncing back and forth between the block and the wing, the 6-foot-8, 241-pound forward averaged 42.23 percent shooting, 10.5 points and 5.1 rebounds in his rookie and sophomore campaigns. He backed up Kevin Love at the four his rookie year, then started 56 games last season -- at both forward positions -- in the wake of several injuries to teammates. Saunders said before training camp he's a big fan of Williams and hopes to see him excel in a flex forward role. Coach Rick Adelman has used him at both spots throughout the preseason, including a start instead of Corey Brewer at small forward Sunday in Montreal against Boston. The decision could put Minnesota up near the luxury tax next season, but the Timberwolves have determined that keeping such a high draft pick and either helping him blossom here or getting something in return for him is better than potentially letting him walk after 2013-14.
