By now, you've probably heard that quarterback Daunte Culpepper announced his retirement from the NFL today. While Culpepper hasn't exactly been lighting up the stat sheets in recent years, it's a surprising development given that he's only 31 years-old and only four years removed from an MVP season, where he threw for over 4,700 yards and one score short of the 40 touchdown mark. So which teams should be burning Culpepper's cell phone before he files his retirement pap...

With reports that Tom Brady's foot may be broken, Culpepper to the Patriots may not be a terrible idea

You have no idea how much a Culpepper-Moss reunion would be, just for a few games, then I want my TB back

I don't get why the Ravens aren't lookin at him. He already looks great in purple & fits like a glove into thugville... errr.. Baltimore.

we would love him playing for the bears. chicago currently has no NFL QB on the roster
  • I've been hearing it wasn't lack of interest-
it was too much ego on Culpepper's part.

he was repping himself and insisted on being given the starter's gig everywhere he went.
he wasn't interested in being anyone's backup- he wanted to start.

    bad move.
    See ya, dante.
Don't let the door hit you in the ego on the way out...

not true at all here is an open letter from culpepper to the NFL comunity from about a week before his retirement was anounced http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/08/29/an-open-letter-from-daunte-culpepper/
      • That's exactly my point. Who writes an open letter to the league?
An ego-driven person who is too close to the situation.
Dante Culpepper the Agent couldn't work with Dante Culpepper the player-
he over valued himself too much.
        he lists 3 possibilities-
        teams that need a starter
        teams open to starter competition
        THEN a veteran backup.
Everything I'm hearing is he felt he was worth a guaranteed amount that was triple what most backups make.
That is ego getting in the way of negotiations.
What agent would EVER explain his reasoning to the league via a public letter?
        Shame-
He should be somewhere in the NFL and could steal a job by the 4th game if he came and played for a reasonable amount plus for attainable bonuses that only trigger if he plays alot of snaps.

I Agree he should have an agent. I'm not shure that he over valued himself, but I know that if he had an agent he would have a job right now.Teams seem to be uncomfortable dealing with him directly. That's probably why he didn't even get a chance to compete for a roster spot.

Four years is an eternity in the NFL. Teams would probably be better off signing the dude in the Culpepper jersey in the background. He'll be cheaper, less of a headache and at this point probably has a similar skill set. Daunte's cashed.

    bears need him very quick

    Nicely done.

He will be back. After week 4, there will be some teams that need one.
  • The Niners need him. Get rid of JTO and Smith and give the job to Culpepper. Keep JTO around to start until Daunte learns the Martz offense and then as a backup to help him so more but there's no way SF has a .500 season with our current QB situation.
  • The reason why so many teams passed on Daunte was because he was a bad decision maker. He proved that off the field with the party boat incident in Minnesota. And he proved that after Randy Moss left. I really can't remeber the last time a wide receiver meant that much to a quaterback but the numbers don't lie. He threw 39 touchdown passes in 2004 and had his best statistical season. The years following he has failed to reach double digit touchdowns and has more interceptions. There is also the question of whether or not he will able to get back to being mobile because of the weight he carries. I would have to imagine that teams would take him if they believed he still had something left, but I don't think any of the teams mentioned (aside from the Cowboys) have enough talented receivers to overshadow his weaknesses.

Rex Grossman looks like a pretty talented receiver in that picture...
