The Steelers finally beat Tom Brady and the Patriots.  The Steelers are now number 1 in the AFC.  They control their own destiny.  The Steelers have gotten better week after week.  If they can continue to grow as a team they could be hard to beat by the end of the year.

Observations

  1. Time of Possession-  The Steelers had the ball for 39 minutes and 22 seconds.  It was almost double the amount of time the Patriots had the ball.  The Steelers controlled the clock and did not let up all game.  The team got 29 first downs and were 10 of 16 on third down.  That is 62%.  The team new they had to keep the ball and score as often as possible.  The Steelers kept New England out of the game by keeping the ball.  What a performance!
  2. Ben Roethlisberger spreading the ball out- Ben hit 9 different receivers on the day.  He had 3 guys with 7 or more catches.  He also had 4 guys with 65 yards or more on the day.  Ben spread the ball out all game long.  When he needed a first down he hit Heath Miller and Emmanuel Sanders.  When he wanted a big play he went to Antonio Brown.  It was a great game all around for all these guys. One bad mistake by Ben was the only worry on the day.  Take that away and he was almost perfect.
  3. LaMarr Woodley was huge again-  Woodley had his fourth straight game with multiple sacks.  He is almost unblockable right now.  He now has 9 sacks on the season.  We are only 8 games into the year.  Woodley went down late in the game.  Lets hope he is ok.  He is the defense right now and the team needs him to much for him to be down.
  4. Young Guys have Big Days-  We already heard about the receivers now for the defensive guys.  Cortez Allen came out and while Gronkowski got the ball he did not let him beat us.  Mundy had another good performance.  Hood just keeps on chugging.  Chris Carter came in for Woodley and played well.  He got a little bit of pressure and did his job.  Keenan Lewis was lock down on all but one play.  He was beat for a touchdown on the one.  The rest of the time he was all over his guy.  It is time for a youth movement, well maybe not a movement but a working them in.  They deserve it.
  5. Ryan Clark showed up-  I normally pick on Clark and I am going to today but I need to show him some love as well.  Lets get the picking out of the way first.  Stupid Penalty.  QUIT HITTING PEOPLE LATE!!!  Clark though made some huge plays today.  A big hit on Green-Ellis on a run play.  He stopped Faulk cold on the one when the Patriots were about to score.  It helped the Steelers take more time off the clock before New England scored.  He played his best game of the year.
  6. MAN TO MAN DEFENSE-  We played to our strengths today.  We have 3 cover corners in Allen, Taylor and Lewis.  They showed that is what they are good at today.  These guys can cover they just are never allowed to.  They played up on the ball and bump and run defense.  They didn’t have to be 10 yards off the ball and save a zone.  Look how much better it was.  I know Dick Lebeau is a zone blitz guy but these guys need to cover.  They will be better for it.  These are now zone corners.  They are man up and get in your face guys.  Keep it that way.
  7. Shaun Suisham has worn out his welcome-  It is time for this guy to go.  He can not make a field goal over 40 at Heinz Field.  All his misses are at Heinz Field.  All of them.  Then he kicked the ball out of bounds on a kickoff.  It is time to try out some kickers.
  8. Brett Keisel is clutch this year-  He had the game winning play again with a strip sack on Tom Brady that lead to a safety.  He knocked down another big third down pass that stopped a big drive by the Patriots.  He just makes the plays when we need them.  It is great that he has come up big in big games and at big times.
  9. Heath Miller deserves his own category-  I know I already mentioned Miller but he was huge today.  He caught 4 passes on the first drive that moved the Steelers all the way down the field.  He had a key block in one of Mendenhalls big runs.  He finished with 7 catches for 85 yards.  He got a first down on 5 of his 7 catches.  He was a machine today.  You can not give him enough credit.
  10. 60 minutes of football- This is the first game all year we played solid football in all aspects for an entire game.  It was nice to see.  Hopefully we see that the rest of the way out.  If we play like this all the time no one will stop us.  Hopefully that team that played the first few weeks never pokes its ugly head out again.
Go Steelers.
