Last season, Cutler had to deal with a below-average offensive line and an offensive coordinator who called pass plays that had him running for his life, but still had a pretty impressive year. Cutler led the Bears to a 7-3 record through 10 games and had the team in prime position to make the playoffs. Unfortunately, a thumb injury ended Cutler’s season prematurely.

Now, Cutler is back. He is ready for 2012 and expectations are sky-high. This season, he can look forward to new weapons on the perimeter: Brandon Marshall, his old pal from Denver, and rookie wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey. Both give Cutler big targets to throw to. With Cutler returning, the Bears have a great chance at a playoff birth in 2012.

The Bears’ backup quarterback situation in 2011 was a mess. After Cutler went down, Caleb Hanie was nowhere near ready to step in and lead the team. Recognizing that finding a good backup was a must this offseason, general manager Phil Emery went out and got someone with a lot of playing experience-- Jason Campbell.

Any team that has to rely on its backup quarterback for an extended period of time is in trouble. However, with Campbell the Bears have someone who can come in for a game or two should Cutler go down and steer the ship without losing too many games. In fact, there probably is not an offense Campbell has not seen considering he had a different offensive coordinator during his time in Washington almost every year.

If everything goes according to plan though, Campbell will only see mop up duty in 2012.

2011 Statistics:

Games Played: 3
Completions-Attempts: 35-55
Completion Percentage: 63.6%
Passing Yards: 414
Touchdowns: 2
Interceptions: 4
QB Rating: 68.3

McCown was signed after Cutler went down in 2011 and will enter the 2012 season as the team's third-string quarterback. McCown is familiar with the personnel and coaching staff, so picking up the offense should not be a problem.

There really is not a scenario in which McCown will see significant playing time unless both Cutler and Campbell get hurt. Still, the Bears are fortunate to have someone like McCown as an emergency quarterback on their roster.
