According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the San Francisco 49ers haven’t started any contract talks with quarterback Alex Smith. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has confirmed that he wants to bring Smith back for next season.
Harbaugh may want to re-sign Smith, but if a team comes in and makes Smith an offer that he can’t refuse and the 49ers won’t match, he might be headed elsewhere.

Rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick was drafted in 2011 by the San Francisco 49ers and head coach Jim Harbuagh to become a potential starter down the road.
But after a great season by Alex Smith, no one is sure when Kaepernick will get on the field and really show what he can do. Especially since Harbaugh has indicated that he wants Smith back.

Conventional wisdom last offseason said that it was only a matter of time before Colin Kaepernick started games for the San Francisco 49ers. Somehow, Colin Kaepernick got the impression that the 49ers' QB position is "an open job." That's not the message from coach Jim Harbaugh, who continues to call Alex Smith his guy. All the Niners have to do is sign him.
Aaron Rogers grabbed the NFL MVP. Not a bad season for the Green Bay Packers QB...I'm sure he'd of preferred to win two more games though.
Other NFL players that came out as winners included:
Baltimore defensive end/linebacker Terrell Suggs, Defensive Player of the Year.
San Francisco's rookie coach Jim Harbaugh, Coach of the Year.
