49ers HC Kyle Shanahan: Jimmy Garoppolo 'fully understands the situation,' is preparing for 'next situation'

San Francisco 49ers veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been replaced by 2021 rookie Trey Lance as his employer's starter and is working out away from teammates while continuing to recover from March shoulder surgery.

49ers general manager John Lynch recently noted that Garoppolo is throwing with "no restrictions" while waiting to learn what comes next. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Friday and made it clear that everybody involved sees the figurative writing on the wall.

"We have a real good relationship with Jimmy," Shanahan explained during a press conference, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "There’s no secret here of what the situation is. I think he fully understands the situation. We fully understand the situation. So, we make the best of it. Jimmy’s out there. He’s feeling better and better each day. I still see him. We have a real good relationship with Jimmy. He’s done some real good things here. So fans getting pumped with him and our players still loving seeing him, that doesn’t surprise me at all."

Shanahan also discussed how the two parties agreed Garoppolo should complete throwing exercises off to the side and not in team drills.

"We made it the best for both," Shanahan remarked. "I mean, if Jimmy wanted to be in every single meeting and wanted to do everything, for sure we would let him. I would guess that isn’t what he would want, totally. And when we asked him, that was accurate — he didn’t totally want that. So he’s just trying to get his body ready for hopefully the next situation he goes into."

Garoppolo has been linked in rumors with the Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks, and Pittsburgh Steelers, but he's owed a $24.2 million base salary that is not guaranteed and is scheduled to count $26.9 million against the salary cap for 2022. Thus, it's widely assumed all would-be buyers are waiting for the 49ers to release Garoppolo before final cuts have to be made on Aug. 30.
