LaMichael James, Oregon's all-time leading rusher and the 49ers' second-round draft pick, debuted on the 49ers practice field Friday. He didn't flinch at his new surroundings. "He's just got a great look in his eye," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. It's a familiar look to Oregon running backs coach Gary Campbell, who said anyone judging James on his 5-foot-9, 195-pound frame will regret it. "He'll be so determined," Campbell said in a phone interview. "You can't measure the size of his heart or the drive inside him. It'll be difficult to hold him down. He relishes challenges." James had the slightest build among all 49ers rookies who reported for their three-day minicamp. But while some, including first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins, gasped for air during the morning practice, James didn't. "Everything's quick-paced at Oregon," James said, "and I'm pretty used to the tempo."

Randy Moss is blowing the 49ers away.
SAN FRANCISCO – 49ers QB Alex Smith is obviously happy with what veteran WR Randy Moss has brought to the table thus far.
“It’s tough to tell that he missed a year of football,” Smith said. “I certainly don’t see any rust. He’s running well, catching well. No surprise, he’s a pro and already has a good understanding of the playbook.”

1st round pick AJ Jenkins reports to the 49ers in poor shape.
SAN FRANCISCO– The 49ers bewildered the football community when they chose wide receiver A.J. Jenkins in the first round. Jenkins was taken off the board before higher ranked names such as Stephen Hill and many others.
Jenkins was brought in to be that top flight speedster that could become a consistent deep threat.
Now the only problem is that he may not be in shape.

Does Jim Harbaugh really trust Alex Smith?
When a team plays as well as the San Francisco 49ers did last season, usually the quarterback gets a lot of credit for that and quarterback Alex Smith was rightfully deserving of the credit. Smith guided the 49ers to a 13-3 regular season record and nearly led them to the Super Bowl. When you dig deeper into the 49ers' passing statistics though, you start to get a very different...

Harbaugh, 49ers open rookie minicamp

49ers rookies report - with plenty of work to do
The rookies who reported to the 49ers' minicamp Friday have run untold numbers of 40-yard dashes, pushed up the 225-pound bench press hundreds of times and run the three-cone drill until their legs gave in preparation for last month's NFL Draft. That didn't prevent coach Jim Harbaugh from a blunt assessment when asked about his receiving crew, including first-round...

Draft Grades: San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers had a chance to fill some holes in this draft but reached too often and failed to add any instant-impact players. It was a disappointing haul for a team hoping to make another deep playoff run in 2012.
A.J. Jenkins is a talented receiver but was a huge reach in the late 1st round. He put together a solid 2011 season, but has always been inconsistent and...
