The San Francisco 49ers shouldn’t start Colin Kaepernick on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints because he’s the hot hand but because the Niners should “make the smart call” about Alex Smith’s health, according to Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle. The 49ers should start Colin Kaepernick against New Orleans on Sunday because somebody, somewhere, has to make the smart call about players' health. Jenkins believes the 49ers should “lean toward full recovery” when it comes to Smith rather than simply throw him back out there two weeks after sustaining a concussion. While Smith may be the superior option, Kaepernick showed he can play last Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Plus, Jenkins points out that the 49ers can afford to take time with Smith considering they currently hold a 1.5-game lead over the Seattle Seahawks in the otherwise lackluster NFC West. Jenkins believes the 49ers need to consider Smith “playing the game for years, and being a healthy, clear-thinking individual in retirement,” over simply one week of football. Report: Colin Kaepernick is the 49ers’ new starting quarterback

According to Jim Trotter of SI.com, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has told Alex Smith that Colin Kaepernick is their new starting quarterback. BREAKING: Jim Harbaugh has informed Alex Smith that Colin Kaepernick will start Sunday, per source. Said decision not based on health. — Jim Trotter (@SI_JimTrotter) November 22, 2012 This is not shocking at all with how well...

Jim Harbaugh Says 49ers Will Go With ‘Hot Hand’ Moving Forward Between Colin Kaepernick, Alex Smith

After Colin Kaepernick tore through the “best defense in the NFL,” San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has a decision to make. Will the 49ers go back to Alex Smith when he recovers from his concussion? Or will they move forward with the second-year Nevada product? Harbaugh wasn’t confirming anything in his press conference on Monday night, telling the media “We...

49ers QB Alex Smith out vs. Bears

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith has been declared out for Monday night's game against Chicago with a concussion. Team medical director Dr. Dan Garza evaluated Smith, who was hurt eight days ago against St. Louis. The 49ers will start second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who replaced Smith in the 24-24 tie with the Rams last week. Chicago also is without starting...

Niners blast Bears to turn showdown into rout

As Alex Smith stood on the sideline with a concussion, San Francisco's potential quarterback of the future went to work - and fast. Strong-armed fill-in Colin Kaepernick made all the right throws, looking every bit a capable NFL No. 1 as the 49ers whipped the Chicago Bears 32-7 in a Monday night NFC showdown at Candlestick Park that quickly turned into a lopsided rout for the home team.

Stash on speculation: grab Colin Kaepernick off your waiver wire and cross your fingers

According to rotoworld there are indications that Colin Kaepernick will get the start this week. In what is becoming a very 49ers heavy early week I’m writing to tell you the obvious: get this guy on your roster. It became clear during Jim Harbaugh’s press conference following San Francisco’s victory over Chicago (and during the game, more importantly) that Smith may not be...

Week 12 Fantasy Football Sleeper: 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.

Colin Kaepernick has big upside as a fantasy quarterback this week. It took guts to do what Jim Harbaugh did on Wednesday, as the second-year head coach of the San Francisco 49ers sat down and told the quarterback, who took the team to the NFC Championship game in2012 that he would be taking a seat in favor of Colin Kaepernick, who will get all the first-team reps this week in...

49ers' Kaepernick gets big assist from Aldon Smith

Aldon Smith's high-flying defense gave Colin Kaepernick all kinds of extra chances in his first career NFL start. And the Kaepernick looked little like a backup in delivering on nearly every one of those opportunities under the lights on football's big stage. The strong-armed Kaepernick passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns in place of the injured Alex Smith, Aldon Smith...

49ers OC: No starter picked for Sunday

49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Thursday that no decision has been made regarding the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's game at the New Orleans Saints. "We're hopeful that Alex (Smith) gets cleared tomorrow, physically," said Roman, responding to conflicting media reports. "We're confident in both quarterbacks to be on the field...

49ers QB Alex Smith Out For Monday Night’s Game

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that his sources have informed him that 49ers QB Alex Smith will not play in Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears after he was unable to get clearance from neurologist following the concussion that he suffered last week. That means Colin Kaepernick, the second-year quarterback out of Nevada, will get the first start of his career....

Jim Harbaugh Is Ironically Benching Alex Smith on Thanksgiving After Once Defending Him Against ‘Jive-Turkey Gobblers’

For 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, letting Alex Smith sit another week and giving the San Francisco starting job to youngster Colin Kaepernick was probably just good football sense. But considering Harbaugh made the decision on the eve of Thanksgiving, the situation has become more interesting. Smith, after all, is the quarterback that Harbaugh defended earlier this season against those...

Colin’s Kaeper Story: The Curious Case Of The Stolen QB Job

Typically here is where I say ‘Don’t Buy The Hype’.  You all know that who read here.  Heck, read yesterday’s post about Justin Blackmon and realize I’m more Negative Nelly than Positive Peggy most times after a big game.  But tonight’s game was different in my eyes.  Though it’s true Alex Smith has had good moments over the last year and a half in San Fransisco...
