I just heard that the 49ers reportedly fired coach Mike Nolan and replaced him with defensive coordinator Mike Singletary. So let's get right to the gut reactions. This was a good move, a necessary move by the 49ers. They should have fired Nolan after the disastrous 2007 season. Instead, John and Denise DeBartolo York let Nolan talk them into bringing him back. They stripped him of much of his front-office power and let him return as what could only be seen as a lame duck coach. For week...

Hopefully the Bay can turn it around. That includes the Raiders. Terrible for what seems like forever now.

Yeah they need to shape up, but big props to the Raiders for taking care of the overrated Jets. Nice job.

It's definitely the right move but the organization continued to show why they are such a joke. You don't make it known that a coach has one game left till he's fired. I guess they realized how stupid it was after hearing the media and fans laugh at them, and did what they should of from the start.

When I heard the news -- I did a happy dance! Not that I think Nolan is totally to blame, but a change was needed and Signletary seems like a bad@$$ dude with strong character. I hope it rubs off.

I hope they are not setting Singletary up to fail. I've heard that the ownership there doesn't do things in the best interest of the team.

Hard to see this happening in the sense that his father was a coach for the 9ers, but this was a long time coming. After taking us 7-9 in 2006, we all thought we had found our coach... but that was short lived with a crappy 2007 season, and an even worse opening this year.

Ironically, this season our offensive rank is up to 23rd, after the inception of Martz as coordinator. The highest it's been since our last payoff berth in 2002. I'm glad though that they chose Singletary as interim coach. Martz couldn't handle it in St. Louis as Head Coach.

Singletary has been an heir apparent for a few years now. His name seems to pop up every time someone is fired or resigns.

I think Mike Martz can generate an offense, if you can do it in Detroit you can do it anywhere. Singletary just needs to execute. In Detroit we have a guy that talks the talk, but he can't walk the walk. Singletary walked it out on the field, he was a bonifide master of the game as a player, so we'll see how he does on the other side of the lines.
  • Nolan didi a good job with what he had. His game day decisions were not the best but hell at least the games have been competitive. I think we are close to being a good team, we need a QB and thats not Nolans fault. He got unlucky drafting Smith, and their were no clear standouts at quarterback that year. Mike Nolan is a very good coach and hope he can rebound. AND GET HOLMGREN

I THINK THAT WHEN YOUR TALKING ABOUT A TEAM THAT USE 2 BE A THRET IN THE NFL LIKE THE 49'S- U HAVE 2 THINK ABOUT THE COACHING THAT GOSE ON!!!! I WATCH THEM PLAY SUNDAY AND I HAVE 2 SAY IT WAS A SIGHT 4 SORE EYES. MR NOLAN HAD A ROLE BUT SO DO THE PLAYERS=SO WHO ARE THEY GOIN 2 LET GO FROM THE TEAM? (MONEY=COACHES=PLAYERS=TEAM) U GUYS DO THE MATH.

Whatever it takes to get the 49ers to play decent football again, I'm for it.

i remeber being a kid and the 9ers had Joe and the Raiders had Jim, then the 9ers got Jerry and the Raiders got Marcus, both teams so good on both sides of the ball, can i say it again? WTF happened?

Nolan should have been fired 2 seasons ago; I'm positive that, Mike Singletary, will turn this team around. Niners have so much talent that it's inevitable for them to win some games.

"Playoff push" would be saying too much. But, a man could only hope, right?

Singletary is a great player - but his experience as a coach is a bit limited. he has never done anything outside of being a position coach hasn't he?
      • I think he's just been a linebacker's coach which is what he did very well. Not all great players can coach. I loved the way this guy played the game with that stare in his eyes. I wish him luck. He deserves it.

The thing that will make him a good interim coach is that he's willing to gamble. He's fearless, yet he is very realistic and logical. Those attributes make for a good coach. And having, Martz, by his side coordinating the talented offense should make for an outstanding new look.

arent they really waiting for holmgren to leave Seatlle so he can comeback to his hometown

If the 49ers learn to play like Singletary did with his heart and fire, they will be in the Super Bowl sooner than you might think.
