Today, the San Francisco 49ers announced that they have signed linebacker NaVorro Bowman through the 2018 season (Credit: AP Photo) Today, the San Francisco 49ers have signed the second piece of their dynamic inside linebacker duo, NaVorro Bowman through 2018. The team officially announced that Bowman signed a contract extension through 2018. According to ProFootballTalk.com, the 49ers announced the signing through Instagram. The announcement can be seen here. A new deal with Bowman, combined with Patrick Willis’s existing contract, means the 49ers will have both of their starting inside linebackers in place through at least 2016. Bowman, whom the 49ers selected in the third round of the 2010 NFL draft, has started every game in each of the last two seasons. NFL Network’s Albert Breer reports that Bowman’s new deal is worth $45.25 million in new money over five years, $25.5 million guaranteed. This is a great move for the 49ers defense who currently lead the NFL in 14.1 points allowed per game. The defense also features the NFL leader in sacks (16.5) with Aldon Smith. If the team is going to continue to be a top five defense, they will need their top players signed long-term.
