Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports reports that the 49ers’ reps spent a good portion of Friday meeting with the agents for a number of this year’s top cornerbacks. Cole adds that 49ers expect to have more than enough cash to sign at least one of the best free agent corners after they’ve found a trade partner for QB Alex Smith. San Francisco has made it quite clear that Smith is available, but recent reports have indicated that there isn’t a great market for him right now, and the 49ers may have to accept something close to a fourth-round pick for him. A source informed Cole that the Chiefs are the “most interested team” at this point in time. He also mentions that the Cardinals could be involved as well. Cole mentions that those within the league believe the Chiefs will ultimately pass on taking a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick.
