San Diego Chargers
Rookie center Jason Slowey is among the 12 players cut by the San Francisco 49ers to trim their roster to 75.
Slowey, a sixth-round draft pick out of Western Oregon, struggled to make an impact during training camp and was waived Monday.
Also cut: fullback Cameron Bell, outside linebacker Kourtnei Brown, defensive tackles Patrick Butrym and Matthew Masifilo, wide receivers Ben Hannula, Joe Hastings and Brian Tyms, cornerbacks Cory Nelms and Deante' Purvis, tight end Joe Sawyer and kicker Giorgio Tavecchio.
On Friday, the Niners (No. 4 in the AP Pro32) must make another round of cuts to finalize their 53-man roster ahead of the season opener Sept. 9 at Green Bay. San Francisco's final preseason game is Thursday night against the San Diego Chargers at Candlestick Park.

The San Francisco 49ers should cut Ted Ginn Jr., and I’ll tell you why.
The 49ers are talking about going into the season with six receivers on the roster; , Ginn, Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree, Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams and this year’s firstround draft pick A.J. Jenkins. For a team that is built around the running game and has two excellent tight ends as well as an...
The 49ers' starting lineup is mostly set, but coach Jim Harbaugh has plenty he's looking for his team to accomplish as San Francisco prepares for Thursday night's preseason finale at home against San Diego. The starters aren't expected to play long, but quarterback Alex Smith will start and Harbaugh is looking for the offense to establish a rhythm and execute on...
Which Randy Moss will we see on the 49ers?
Rizzla: This is a tricky one to answer. On one hand Moss will be motivated playing for a contender. On the other hand his QB will be unable to get him the ball enough, and he will only be on the field for obvious passing plays. I really liked Moss as a WR3 candidate but now realize he is merely a bye week filler with WR3 upside. If the 49ers...
The San Francisco 49ers could be using Kyle Williams to return kicks to start the season.
That is because Ted Ginn Jr. is right back where he was to end last season – out with an injury.
Ginn suffered a right ankle injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s victory over the Denver Broncos. According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, X-rays on Ginn’s ankle were negative...
The San Francisco 49ers ranked fourth in the NFL in total defense last season and second in scoring defense, and there's no question defense is the team's strength. So it comes as somewhat of a surprise that opposing offenses have moved the ball and scored with relative ease against the 49ers during the preseason. That includes Sunday's 29-24 victory over Denver...
San Francisco 49ers running back Brandon Jacobs decided he would reveal some of the hate messages he receives on Twitter. According to Mathew Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the San Francisco 49ers have become the first NFL team to film an anti-gay bullying video.

Apparently getting warmed up to pick up this season where he left off last year, David Akers kicked four of his five field goals in the second half Sunday afternoon to complete a run of 19 consecutive points by the 49ers that allowed San Francisco to rally from a two-touchdown deficit to beat the Denver Broncos and improve to 2-1 in the preseason.
DENVER -- David Akers kicked four of his five field goals in the second half and the San Francisco 49ers withstood Peyton Manning's first two touchdown passes since joining the Denver Broncos for a 29-24 exhibition victory on Sunday. Alex Smith played most of the first half for the 49ers and had a touchdown pass to his fleet tight end Vernon Davis in a solid effort. Smith...
