The way San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner looks at it, a good defense doesn't need any extra incentive to hit hard. "If you have the right type of guys in that (defensive) room, you don't have to set bounties or pay money for guys to play physical and play hard," Whitner said Monday, via the San Jose Mercury News. "It's going to come naturally. That's the type of guys we have on our defense." It's a point that has become somewhat lost in the New Orleans Saints' "bounty" scandal. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams wasn't very effective at his job the last two years. The Saints might have taken a lot of cheap shots, but they weren't particularly good at stopping teams. The turnover-focused approach collapsed in 2010 and 2011. They couldn't stop the run or the pass, the Saints had chance after chance to stop Alex Smith in crunch time and it didn't happen. Whitner is right that the 49ers' defense has more hard-hitting talent than Williams ever dreamed of in New Orleans.

Jim Harbaugh blasts media for criticizing rookie A.J. Jenkins
The 49ers are going to try to establish a better passing game this season, and first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins is expected to be a significant part of the plan. By adding Jenkins, Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, San Francisco is hoping their offense can become more dynamic and Alex Smith can be more effective throwing the ball. However, there has been some indication that Jenkins...
San Francisco 49ers 2012 Season Preview
I was trying to figure out a way to attack the San Francisco 49ers 2012 Season Preview when I realized this is going to be difficult.
A lot of the things that went right last year are simply a result of excellent coaching, smart players and luck. Two of the three of those things won’t, at least they shouldn’t, change but will the 49ers get the bounces they did during the regular...
Jim Harbaugh Retracts On Randy Moss Being Best 49ers Receiver
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh recently retracted from a statement he made to former Oakland Raiders signal-caller Rich Gannon regarding Randy Moss being the best wide receiver on the team, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.
Harbaugh cleared up the confusion, clarifying that a No. 1 receiver has not been named and the original statement was made in reference...
49ers’ Michael Crabtree once again banged up
Getty Images
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree was held out of practice on Saturday and Sunday after suffering what appears to be either an ankle or foot injury on Friday.
It looks like the 49ers aren’t too worried about Crabtree’s long-term health.
“Like any injury, you never know how long it’s going to take these guys to come back,” said 49ers GM Trent...
Peter King: “Randy Moss absolutely has something left”

Peter King of SI.com told Rich Eisen of the NFL Network via NFL.com, that San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss that there’s no doubt Randy Moss has plenty of talent left.
“When I saw Randy Moss come off the line of scrimmage and fake Perrish Cox so severely that Cox slipped and Randy Moss ran across the middle and caught a beautiful crossing throw,” King...
Randy Moss the top receiver for the 49ers?
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh may think that Michael Crabtree has the best hands Harbaugh has ever seen, but when the rest of the package is considered another receiver lands higher than Crabtree on the team’s current pecking order. Rich Gannon of Sirius XM NFL Radio says that Harbaugh claims Moss is the team’s “best receiver right now,” [...]
Vernon Davis And Randy Moss At 49ers Camp
Moss needs you arm workout Juan…
Randy Moss has been routinely beating 49er DBs in practice and is has shown a maturity he lacked before his turned in his cleats back in 2010. Vernon Davis really caught on to the offense late in 2011 and proved it with a monster playoff run. Will Alex Smith be let loose?

Bowman looking to build on last year's success
With newborn twins waiting at home and plenty of work to do on the field, NaVorro Bowman is feeling a great sense of responsibility this summer with the San Francisco 49ers.
That comes with the territory after Bowman's emergence last year as one of the NFL's best linebackers in just his second season.
Bowman went from a reserve role as a rookie to becoming a first-team...
Niners' Gore ready for competition, more winning
Frank Gore doesn't much believe in being overworked. While the 49ers went to great lengths to expand their depth chart behind Gore, the team's leading rusher with 1,211 yards last season, it's not in the prideful 29-year-old's job description or genetic fiber to hand the ball off. He's not only leading by example at practice, Gore is giving younger running...
49ers' Gore still driven despite accomplishments
(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) Frank Gore may stand alone among all San Francisco 49ers running backs but he's not done working.
The three-time Pro Bowler is still one of the first players to arrive each day at team headquarters, beginning his training camp ritual with an early morning conditioning session long before the 49ers take to the practice field...
49ers TE Delanie Walkers Jaw Injury Still Lingers
In the pantheon of NFL injuries, it probably ranks below Ronnie Lott And The Severed Pinkie, but its still enough to give one pause: Delanie Walker still cant feel part of his face. This week, the 49ers tight end said he severed nerves on the left side of his face as a result of the broken jaw he suffered on Dec. 24 in a win at Seattle. Walker still has some isolated numbness...

49ers Never Offered FS Dashon Goldson A Long-Term Deal
On Thursday, after signing his franchise tender and reporting to training camp on time, safety Dashon Goldson replied not really when asked if the team had offered a multiyear deal during the offseason. Asked if the 49ers ever presented Goldson with a long-term contract offer, Baalke said he didnt discuss contract negotiations in the media. Baalke was, however, happy to discuss...
Moss, Manning looking for revivals
Observations from around the league as training camps gear up ...
What do you think of Randy Moss? He is not going to end up on any of my teams, and I'll likely be the person least interested in him at every draft. I have a few problems with taking Moss, who did not play a single NFL snap last season. First, he'll be 35.5 years old once the season starts, which means he...
