The San Francisco 49ers have traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs in return for a second-round pick in the 2013 draft (No. 34 overall) and a conditional mid-round pick in 2014.  CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora first reported that the 49ers had "effectively completed" a trade involving Smith on Sunday but the other team acquiring the 28-year-old was not determined.  49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith — Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) February 27, 2013 Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith. — Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) February 27, 2013 As Glazer said the trade can not become official until the new league year begins March 12.  Smith will play under the terms of his existing contract, which means he will be owed $8.5 million in 2013.     Before suffering a concussion Nov. 11, Smith was having one of his best seasons of his career.  He led the 49ers to a 6-2 record with a 104.1  passer rating.  But coach Jim Harbaugh made the decision to stay with Colin Kaepernick. Smith, 28, has thrown for 14,280 yards with 81 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in seven NFL career seasons with the Niners. Smith will now join a Chiefs team that won just two games last season. But have hired former Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid to take over as head coach.
