The San Francisco 49ers plan to release quarterback David Carr on Thursday.
CSN Bay Area reported the planned roster move of Carr, which will save the 49ers $2.375 million in salary cap room.
On Tuesday, the 49ers re-signed quarterback Alex Smith. They also selected quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the 2011 draft.
The top overall pick in the 2002 draft, Carr has not been a starter since 2006. He completed 5-of-13 passes last season.
