Got to agree. I love my man Emmitt, but Barry was it. If he wouldn't have retired when he did, he would have set a record that no back would come close to for a long time. And, Barry played on a team without a good offensive line for most of his career.

Didn't forget him........just don't think he was the best of all time. Of course, if you wan to go back a few years, I don't think there was a tougher one than Jim Brown, but the one with the best instincts and moves was Barry.

Hey guys Jim Brown. They guy retired at age 29. If he played as long as either of the afore mentioned we wouldn't be having this conversation.

That's OK. It's getting late. Yeah, Jim Brown retired very early and was a real beast. Not sure if he would have ended up with as many yards as Emmitt, Barry, or Walter, but who knows. Odd are, he might have.

Too bad Terell Davis couldn't stay healthy because he was on pace to put them all to shame.

I think LT may have the best shot now if he stays healthy.

Who leads the NFL in all-time rushing? Payton was one of my faves of all time, but Emmitt passed him up and Barry would have blown the rushing record out of the water had he stayed in the league.

although you def can argue barry sanders, jim brown, and emmitt smith too... however, i also have a feeling in about 6 years well all be saying LaDainian could be on top of this list

I know one thing, Emmitt Smith wouldn't have been sitting on the sidelines in that playoff game. He would have been out there playing and helping his team try to win the game.

are you really helping youre team when youre not playin at the highest capability? do you think him limpin around wouldve actually hurt them more than help them? if LT couldve been on that feild, i believe he wouldve... thats just my opinion though

TD still makes me shudder at what could have been. Look at the yardage his team got over the years he would have played if he could have stayed healthy. Then look at the backs who ran those yards. It is just frightening. BUT durability is a part of the game...

Bo Jackson is another one that was a beast and had to quite early.

Walter Payton had more heart and toughness than just about anyone who ever played the game. That matters in my book.

If you want to talk about heart and toughgness i would say earl campbell of then huston oilers

maybe allday is best. 2nd in the league in a bunch of stuff including rushing touchdowns and rushing yards, so i think adrian peterson is the right fit

Peterson has no business in this conversation. One year means next to nothing in this league. Sweetness, Barry, JB, and Emmitt; they did it year after year. If we went off of any single season perforomance we'd have to include guys like Portis and Ickey Woods.

I think fiverings said it best. Barry wasn't as complete a package as Brown or Payton, but he was the best pure runner of the bunch.

Compare Gale Sayers' numbers to Terell Davis's numbers and you'll change your mind on that one.

It does. I was just responding to the gale sayers comment. He doesn't belong because if you were willing to throw out longetivity Davis makes him look like boy playing with men.

Can't go wrong with Barry Sanders. Every time I hear his name I am reminded how collossally awful the Detroit Lions have been.Even with Barry Sanders they couldn't win a playoff game.
