PLAYERS: Luis Castillo

Jim Baumbach of Newsday sat down with Luis Castillo and has a great article on the veteran second baseman's struggles last year and what to expect this year. He has certainly made a positive impression on the field this spring with a .276 BA and a club high 15 walks giving him a .467 OBP. With the Twins Castillo hit second but they also put two lead-off caliber players at the bottom of the order, so he was really an table setting RBI guy, this spring his Slg. pct. is .409 and he has 8 RBIs while hitting lead-off or second. His quickness seems to be back as well as his healthy; he's made several fine defensive plays, beaten out a few infield hits and even stolen two bases. As of yet I'm still not fully on board, I will admit I'm waiting to see him come up lame or go into a slump but I'm sure those concerns will subside the longer he succeeds. I do know that he needs to get off to a fast start to keep the boo birds off his back....."I feel like I'm ready f...

Luis Castillo Wants To Win

In eight days, the Mets begin a new season with a new bullpen, a new bench, and a new fifth starter. All else remains the same for the most part, including at second base where Luis Castillo returns for the second year of his four year deal. Nobody could have thought that Castillo would be back in 2009 after a season to forget last year. It was not for a lack of trying, as Omar was...

The Brett Favre Saga - Is It the Madden Curse Striking Again?

The Madden Curse: Remember when McNabb appeared on the cover of Madden '06? Remember McMabb suffering a sports hernia injury and missing the final seven games of the season? Could the Madden Curse be happening again? Could the Brett Favre saga be that simple? When the talented people at EA decided to pick the player to grace the cover of Madden '09, they wanted...

Several players pressing

Whether during the 4 for 5 losing streak or the three game winning streak several players appear to be pressing and not only are they struggling offensively but it's started to effect their fielding.Because of who he is David Wright is the most obvious player who is pressing. Down the stretch Wright is doing his best D-Rod impression instead of his normal D-Wright. It appeared...

Nitpicking; Castillo - Wise

The Mets winning the season opening game, on the back of a fine performance by Johan Santana and an explosive breakout by the offense in the fourth inning. A Little Bit of Everything At Sheaa??

Last night I headed out to Shea and watched the Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 to stay one game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for the National League wild card spot. But before I recap the experience, a quick back story: Back in July, my wife calls me at work excited, telling me her job was giving out Mets tickets and that she got two for us. She's doesn't like baseball...

In Omar we trust....For four more...

The Mets made it official today by announcing that Omar Minaya will be the general manager for the next four years. I'm disappointed with how the last two years have ended but lets be real overall Omar has been a good GM.Lets not forget where we came from, between the four years prior to Omar (2001-2004) the Mets had an overall record of 294-352 (.455%) and the best year in...

Right team wrong outfielder...

Maybe I had the right team, just the wrong outfielder when I suggested last week that Andruw Jones might be the bad contract that could dispel Luis Castillo. As I said then the 31 y/o Jones is playing winter ball and is out to prove he's not washed up, the Dodgers may decide to go in another direction and it will be hard to move Jones' contract. Both Jones and Castillo are...

Castillo will not be traded for Guillen!

Many have raised question that Luis Castillo might be traded for Jose Guillen. Joel Sherman of the NY Post wrote that he learned such a trade was discussed last July and that an unnamed executive "thought" the deal might be revisited this offseason. Dick Kaegel of MLB.com writes, "The whole scenario doesn't sound right because a) Castillo went on the disabled...
