Quarterback Matt Cassel will not play in the Kansas City Chiefs' opener against the Baltimore Ravens because of a left knee sprain.
He was placed on the Chiefs' inactive list on Sunday. The Chiefs are expected to start fourth-year veteran Brodie Croyle.
Cassel injured the knee Aug. 29 in a preseason game against Seattle and did not return to practice until Monday.

Looks like the Chiefs will not rush their hopeful franchise player back against one of this centuries nastiest defenses. Brodie Croyle will get the start with Tyler Thigpen looking over his shoulder. Should be a good day for the Ravens defense. I would be surprised if Croyle makes it out of the game healthy.

BALTIMORE | Brodie Croyle believed most of the week that Matt Cassel would be ready to start at quarterback for the Chiefs on Sunday. Croyle didn’t get the word until Sunday morning that Cassel would be inactive and that he would be making the start against the Ravens.
