Culpepper should have spoken with reporters either Monday, when coach Jim Schwartz announced Stafford as the starter, or on Wednesday, when the team and reporters return to Allen Park. Basically, Culpepper did not want to answer any questions about the situation. The statement essentially says that he will not discuss the situation -- and he may not make any more public comments for the rest of his life as a Lion. OK, that's his right. But it's not as honorable as facing the music in defeat or in an uncomfortable situation. When Jon Kitna made fun of troubled defensive line coach Joe Cullen, Kitna faced the music and spoke with reporters. When center Dominic Raiola ...

Culpepper Shows Class in Assuming Backup Role

When Matt Stafford was named to the starting quarterback role on Monday, one of the voices that remained silent was from the man he beat out for the job: Daunte Culpepper. Lions intercept potential schism

With quarterback Daunte Culpepper reportedly broken-hearted (apparently, he paid his dime and only read a newspaper) and teammates reportedly somber in the wake of the news that rookie Matthew Stafford has won the quarterback "competition" in Detroit, Culpepper has issued...

Schwartz Opts Against Easy Way Out on QB Choice

Detroit Lions Likely Shopping Daunte Culpepper Already

Daunte Culpepper had better not get too comfortable in his Honolulu blue jersey this season. After head coach Jim Schwartz made the call to start Matthew Stafford at quarterback from day one, Culpepper’s presence is suddenly much less valuable to the Lions … except maybe on the trade market. Of course, what if the Lions are just testing Stafford out? They could pull...

IT’S STAFFORD OR BUST FOR THE LIONS IN 2009

The Detroit Lions have named Matthew Stafford for the 2009 season, going as far as to say that he’ll keep playing–regardless of performance–unless he gets injured. Depending on who you ask, Stafford either played well enough in preseason to close whatever gap there was between him and the wiley vagabond Daunte Culpepper, or coach Jim [...]

The Future Is Now for Stafford and the Lions, But Is It the Right Move?

The Detroit Lions have named their starting quarterback, and in doing so, they have made the decisive move on declaring their path towards the future. They even picked the appropriate day for doing so—Labor Day. For most Lions fans (two words when viewed together tend to suggest irony), this in itself hits the nail on the proverbial head. For Matthew Stafford, this marks the...

Fantasy Football Foolish Thoughts: Are You Ready for Some Football?

The final weekend of the preseason might be the worst week as an NFL fan. Starters play only a few minutes, while coaches get a look at the rest of the depth chart to make final cuts, and we all know that in just one more week the games will actually mean something. While the Labor Day weekend appeased us with some college football action, real NFL football is now just days away...
