Jack Del Rio isn't holding it against Derrick Harvey. On The Jack Del Rio Show Tuesday evening on WOKV, the head coach said that the lack of a contract for the first round pick wasn't the fault of the former Gator, but instead, it's all about Harvey's agent, Ken Kremer. "Obviously, it has gone on quite a while and there's a great deal of money that's gone by right now," Del Rio said. "Quite frankly, I think its more about the agent than the player. When you look at the numbers, it doesn't make sense for anyone expect the agent building a client base for next year." Those comments?Del Rio's first public words on the Harvey situation in weeks?mirror the comments by defensive end Paul Spicer on Monday urging Harvey to "put away the toys, be a man" and get the deal done. It's clear that both coach and player want Harvey in camp and both seem to think that the reported gap in the deal (around $1 million in guaranteed money) is too small to quibble over. Both also recognize the Jaguars need to get Harvey in camp so he can help out the pass rush that was ineffective Saturday night against the Dolphins. Harvey has set a Jaguars team record for the longest rookie holdout in team history. Even if he signed today, he wouldn't be ready to play Saturday in Tampa, and at earliest, he could potentially see some action a week from Thursday against Washington. You can listen to the entire show and Del Rio's comments here.

  • He needs a new agent.... He will be virtually useless this season when he finally joins the rest of the team

    lol harvey.....
  • He will sign, the agent can't afford to lose that much money that a holdout and lower future pick would entail. If the Jags reduced the offer $400K a week, he would sign sooner—as long as the Jags don't waiver. That will also make the game cheaper for everyone. If they give in to get him in camp a couple of weeks sooner which I suspect will happen, then all agents will push the envelope even more. There is no incentive for the agent to have a contract signed before game 1, so unless the player pushes for the signing, the agent won't rush—no agent money in a player signing even a day earlier. Soon, football will be a past sport I watched like baseball. Then, the NY, MS, and few high market teams will compete until the NFL ultimately collapses.
  • Currently, there is no incentive for the agent to have a contract signed before game 1, so unless the player pushes for the signing, the agent won't rush. The team could change that formula by offering a lower salary. Increasing the sakary encourages the bad agent behavior--it would be stupid for an agent on his own to accept an early contract if he thinks the team will legitamately increase the offer.
