Eagles Off-Season To-Do List

We're three weeks away from the beginning of the official NFL off-season, when teams are allowed to begin making offers to players and teams. I'm very excited. Chances are that the Eagles will not be inactive like they have been in recent past. Similar to what I did in another article of mine, "Possible Weapons for Eagles in '08", I'll share what I hope the Eagles do, to help them become the team they need to be in order to finally win the Super Bowl, while considering current rumors.

Most recently, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Asante Samuel may be targeted by the Eagles. There was another rumor that the Eagles may trade Reggie Brown and a 4th round pick to the Detroit Lions for WR Roy Williams. Another source said that the Eagles were eying Vanderbilt OT Chris Williams at the Senior Bowl.

My thoughts...I love it. I'd be satisfied if only those three things get accomplished this off-season.

Asante Samuel and Lito Sheppard. What a pairing that would be! That could become the best CB-tandem in the NFL. Asante Samuel would open up so much; not just the defense but the special teams as well. Sheldon Brown could move to strong safety and Quintin Mikell could become a full-time member of the special teams, where he played great last year. Although, I would worry about how Sheldon Brown would take the whole thing. Last year, he was upset that Jim Johnson gave William James an open opportunity to take the starting role away from him. Last month, he argued that Donovan McNabb was wrong in asking for more playmakers. He obviously doesn't like the idea of moving to safety.

I have this weird feeling about what all could come of trading for Roy Williams. If the Eagles were to go out and just sign a free agent, like Bernard Berrian, we would be set at WR. By swapping WRs, I'm unsure whether or not Andy Reid would want to hand the third string role to Hank Baskett or Jason Avant. Is there a possibility that he could be trying to add another playmaker while, at the same time, keep a spot open for a wideout coming from the draft? Enter DeSean Jackson. I don't see why the Eagles wouldn't be taking a very serious look at him. The Eagles understand how bad their special teams were last season and have witnessed, just as the rest of the NFL has, what a superstar returning kicks can do for a team (the Bears and Devin Hester).

Eagles Off-Season To-Do List:

1. Do whatever it takes (I don't care how big of a price he is) to get Asante Samuel but, first, make sure Sheldon Brown would be satisfied with the switch to safety. It wouldn't be a good idea to have another disgruntled defensive back (formerly Michael Lewis). I can't see Asante Samuel going back to the Patriots for three reason. First, Samuel and the Patriots agree to a deal back in August which gave Samuel assurance that he won't be tagged for the 2008 season. Second, I can't see Samuel wanting to come back to the mess that is going to be the Patriots next year. Yes, they will be a mess. You can't go 18-0, come up short in the Super Bowl but suddenly have a lot of motive to return in '08 and try to accomplish the same task. Third, Samuel wants the big bucks and he wasn't given that by the Pats in '07 (according to Samuel), why would they now?

2. Trade WR Reggie Brown and a 4th round pick to the Detroit Lions for WR Roy Williams. The front office needs to satisfy its players (mainly McNabb and Westbrook) and get them a playmaker WR. Roy Williams looks to be the most reasonable option. Larry Fitzgerald is too much money, Chad Johnson is too much of a locker room risk, and Javon Walker is too injury prone. Also, unlike Johnson, Roy Williams is only 26 years old.

3. Sign Roy Williams to a long-term deal. Roy Williams will be a free agent at the end of the 2008 season. Can we, for once, keep a top wide receiver for more than a year (Stallworth and Owens)?

4. Trade 2008 2nd Round Pick, William Thomas, Jevon Kearse, and Jason Avant for a mid to late-1st round pick. William Thomas has been great on and off the field (great guy) for the Eagles over the years but he's getting up there in age (34 by next season's end). It is doubtful that the Eagles will resign him to a new contract for the 2009 season with all of these lineman in the waiting (Max Jean Gilles, Winston Justice, etc). I think it'd be best to also let Jevon Kearse go. I personally think the Eagles have treated him like garbage. I'm sure he was well enough to play each game but was still benched for most of the games. He sold his house. He's well on the way out of town. I wish him the best of luck to whichever team he goes to.

5. Resign Joselio Hanson, Thomas Tapeh and Sav Rocca.

6. With the two first round draft picks, draft WR DeSean Jackson of California and OT Chris Williams of Vanderbilt. With the third round pick, draft CB Tracy Porter of Indiana. Jackson would give us another playmaker and a great return man. Williams would have a good chance to step in and play right away. If not, the Eagles could move Todd Herremans back to left tackle, opening up a spot for Max Jean Gilles at guard. The Eagles have had way too many injuries in the secondary over the years, Porter would add another corner to what would suddenly become the best in the business (the secondary).

NICE!!!!!!!!!!! very nice read. i'm diggen your lineup!!

Thanks for the compliment.

yeah i def. love the idea of this happenning.........to all eagles fans i must say this might be the year where everyone in the league is looking for our birds to make a big splash in the off-season and i think we need to do something like 04 when we got owens and kearse GET US PLAYMAKERS

Just a few things. Lions have stated they are shopping Williams but the rumor was just that. They are looking for value, maybe throw in one of our younger LB's(not Bradley, maybe Jordan) to aid the lions hurting LB corps.

As far as Sheldon Brown goes he has openly stated over the past year that he would not mind making the switch BACK to safety. He played at safety all the way through college and was asked to switch either his senior year or after he was drafted, I cant remember. Either way he wont be new to the position and would give us a very solid secondary. If this happens and Samuels/Sheppard are our starting CB's then we need to address the nickel CB spot in the draft, early. First day pick up a CB/Return Specialist. Gives us depth, a return man, and as strong of a secondary as there is in this league.

Why would Brown be unhappy about moving to safety? I don't think it's a slap in the face or anything. Brown's coverage, especially against players like Plaxico, has been questionable. He's lost a step to be the guy at corner, but he would be perfect at SS -- can cover AND hit. Samuel would be a perfect situation for this D.

I agree with eveything you have to say. Do you really think someone will really bite on the Thomas/Kearse/Avant trade? I don't think it would happen. I think the Eagles should keep Tra Thomas, there's no need to get rid of him. Pick up Williams in the first round. Is he really this legit? I would love DeSean Jackson too, but Reid doesn't like to take WRs in the first round because you can still find them later. Get the guy who will anchor your line after Runyan and Thomas. The in the 2nd round, I go for a DB or S. If Cromartie slips, I trade up to get him. If not, I would consider Zbikowski as early as the 2nd round, I'm sure he'll get picked up by someone late 2nd, early 3rd. In the 3rd round, I would go for Adarius Bowman, he's a beast of a receiver, who has a ton of potential, but his stock has dropped because of character issues. He's a steel in the 3rd round. In the 4th round I would go for Justin King, a speedy CB with return skills. If not, perhaps Steve Slaton, if he's available in the 4th. A Reggie Bush type-player that could create ton of mismatches when he's on the field with Westbrook.

I agree with you ZZ Reid will anchor this line for years to come with this years 1st round pick. WR's will be very available come rounds 2-5. With the compensatory picks that they are to receive for last years losses, They will have plenty of opportunity to draft a WR.

nice article except that porposed idea of trading Tra jevon and avant for a mid first, no one would ever acept that, and the Eagles have express interest in bringing Tra back for the right price, he is still playing at a high level. If anyone is going to get traded for any draft picks it is going to be Sean Considine, the emergence of Mikell last year and the possible Samuel signing makes him on the block. The line backers will prolly be weakside Gaither Middle Bradley and Strongside Gocong, with TKO coming in nickle situations and gocong as a situational pass rusher like the NE game. JJ as already stated that Victor Abiamiri will be this years Bunkley and start the season most likely, Jevon Kearse i could see them giving him training camp and preaseason to prove he can still play. In my opinion Thomas tapeh is garbage lol fullbacks are expendable, go after WVU fullback Schmidt hes nasty. If we do not sign Asante i want Big Tom for ND. Knowing BigRed he will draft a linemen int he first round so we shall see. GO BIRDS!!!!!!

Here is what has to happen

1. Get a number 1 receiver, most preferably Larry Fitzgerald (hell even Randy Moss cause he will get paid what he wants here and it can happen), because we don't want Chad, trust me (T.O. junior) and package Reggie Brown into the deal as he is a disappointment (just cant be what we wanted him to be)

2. Get D.J Hackett or Jerry Porter (or even Javon Walker with a one year contract to start opposite our number 1 guy...how sick would that be and yes we can do that since we have the cap space)

3. Move Curtis to the Slot and draft Deshawn Jackson...Use both on kick off returns, and jackson on punt returns

4. Draft Depth on the Offensive line but also think about moving Max Jean Gilles into Todd Herrimans spot

5. Draft Dominique Rogers-Cromartie Second round or another corner...cause we don't need Asante Samuel. This defense was great last year, and will be back to form next year, we just need CB depth. Leave Mikell as the starter opposite Dawkins.. Also Let go of Darren Howard and Mcdougle, but keep Kearse because i believe he can be back to that form of early 2006 where he was going crazy. Also, Abiamiri should see more snaps on D, but yes, another DE pickup in FA should be ok. Our linebacker corps shouldnt be touched as it was excellent in 07. We just need some depth at defensive tackle, which can be addressed in the draft, or even in FA.

ummm iono its good but why do we always draft linemen? its killin me lets get kelly and jackson justice should get a chance
