As I sit here waiting for Death Storm 2010 to hit SE MI (If you are watching the local news in Detroit, they are all but saying, "EVERYBODY PANIC!!!" over a lousy 6"-10" of snow. It's MICHIGAN for chrissakes!), and Comcast to show up and diagnose my web connection issues,  it seems like a good time for a link dump. I'll likely make this a regular feature during the off season when there isn't much in the way of Lions news to comment upon. Vegas Super Bowl odds for the 2010 NFL season have been released, and the Lions come in at 100-1. I'd make it more like 50,000,000-1, but I'm a jaded curmudgeon. Dick LaBeau, the great Lions CB, legendary defensive coordinator for the Steelers, and recently elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, says he is going to use his new HOF status to campaign for a pair of retired Lions legends, DT Alex Karras and OLB Wayne Walker, to get their much deserved enshrinement. One of my media arch enemies, Jerry Green, agrees in regard to Karras. They are both deserving of consideration, and Karras should have been a lock long ago. I won't get my hopes up, as there seems to be some sort anti-Detroit bias when it comes to all halls of fame. Matthew Stafford had some input as to the Lions' off season needs. What, exactly, do the Lions need? According to John Niyo at the News, Stafford isn't telling, other than saying, "Some pieces". They better be big ass pieces. The Wall Street Journal chimes in on the Lions struggles, saying "Only a Lions Super Bowl title could compare to the Saints’ glorious Sunday, in terms of contrast with a franchise’s long history of futility." Even the evil, economy collapsing, money grubbing whores on Wall Street know bad football when they see it. The always erudite Ty at The Lions in Winter tells us how the Lions can win "like the Saints". The way to win a Super Bowl “like the Saints” is to have talent, and smart coaches who can think outside of the box to maximize that talent. Easier said than done, unfortunately. At Mlive, Killer Kowalski lays out a scenario where the Lions can trade down, but still draft one of the impact defensive linemen, Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy. Thing is, it's never been easy to trade down from the upper reaches of the 1st round. In the salary cap era, it's even more difficult. It's still a longshot, as either Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen (or both) have to have kick ass workouts at the NFL combine and/or college pro days, and a team has to be impressed or desperate enough with them to trade up.  As I said, it's a longshot. The Church of Schwartz is going back through past years of WalterFootball.com mock drafts, and hilarity ensues. By the way, Walter Football's latest 2010 mock Killer's scenario about one of the young QB's moving to the top of the draft coming to fruition. The Rams taking Clausen, with Suh then falling into the Lions' lap...even though they claim the best selection would be drafting Russell Okung to protect Stafford. One question. Protecting Stafford is important, but have they ever seen the Lions' defense in action?
