Lito Sheppard is worth the price for the Eagles

Controversy is interesting, but it's not good for football teams. The Eagles learned that in 2005, when their season imploded because of turmoil surrounding Terrell Owens.

Now the Eagles face another dicey situation involving an unhappy player, and they had better nip this in the bud. They need to renegotiate Lito Sheppard's contract rather than trade a 27-year-old cornerback who has been to two Pro Bowls.

If the Eagles insist on trading Sheppard, they are unlikely to get equal value. They have been trying to deal him for two months but have found no offers to their liking. And if the result of a trade is a draft pick, that won't help Philadelphia make the playoffs this year.

But Sheppard can. Asante Samuel, who made his first Pro Bowl with New England last season, Sheldon Brown and Sheppard would give the Eagles the best cornerback rotation in the NFL. They'd make a better trio than Destiny's Child.

CLICK it 4 the full read......he's got some very valid points made & LOL to comparing the trio to Destiny's child - bit of humor on his part i suppose. i for one, am all about keeping Lito.....but that's just me!!!

Unless Sheppard is asking for a king's ransom, the Eagles should give him a raise and benefit from his prime years. Sure, it's tempting to trade Sheppard. But the better move would be to keep him....

I think that the Eagles FO would be happy to keep Sheppard. But will they re-do his contract? I doubt it. the Eagles usually take the stand that player should honor their contract and have yet to give in to anyone. If anything, they will look to trade him after the June 1st cuts for a veteran receiver. If not, Lito will have to live with his current contract and situation b/c that is what he signed on for. It's just common sense that next years players will earn more money (increasing exponentially). Players quickly forget how happy they were when they first signed their contract extension. I can see how owners become equally as frustrated with their prima donna players.

This makes sense......lito is a good player....he should honor his contract if he wants a new one......do your job......, if at the end of the contract you have earned more money....then you should get it.......missing 14 games, and injury proned seasons dont help us win......Samuel was a great decision......keeping lito would be great decision......the rumors again about Chad coming....hey it would be great, if not keep Lito and if he earns his way at the end of his contract give him a good deal.....it's all about the team.....earn your money that's the way it should be

I agree 100 %...Lito has to honor his contract this year...if he stays healthy and makes pro bowl, he can demand a new one.. as far as trading him, is say do it if we get a #1 receiver..any case, eagles are gonna rock this year...go eagles !!

I agree 100% Latin. And I'll add kudos to Lito for handling this with class. I hope that if he's not traded he will honor the contract that he signed. Now keeping Sheldon quiet will be another story.....lol.

i'll 2nd that latin, mom & warlord. and u r right Mom, class he has indeed, i guess we will know soon enough how it's gonna play out.

Brown will most definitely want his next b/c birds of a feather certainly flock together (pun intended). haha :)

you know how the eagles jump on the most talented player from other teams when there available, well dont you think they would be making another team an offer if lito played for another team and wanted to be traded? I know they would.

Why do they have to re-do his contract???????? He can't afford to jeopardize the rest of his career, be it here or elsewhere, by sitting out. It would make little sense to renegotiate Lito's deal after actively trying to dump him in order to clean up the roster.

yeah thats just silly saying we have to redo his contract is crazy he hasnt stayed healthy his value is obviously not that high or else we would have traded him so he will play where hes told and if thats here he should play hard and stay healthy if he wants more money

IF HE PERFORMS LIKE A PRO BOWLER THIS YEAR THEN I SAY NEXT YEAR WE GIVE'EM SUM MORE MONEY...NOT BEFORE WE GIVE WEST HIS FIRST..HE IS AY MORE DESERVING OF A RAISE THAN ANYONE...

it would cause an avalanche of players wanting more money. First its Lito, then Sheldon wants some, then West, Then countless others will be lining up for a raise. We would be like the cardinals.

I agree with a little bit of what everybody is saying. First of all if he can be a team player and not cause any turmoil then I am all for keeping him, But if we can package something up for a proven #1WR then i also say we do that to. But I totally agree with TonyStark we need to keep Westbrook happy, that is top priority. Lito needs to prove that he can stay healthy for a whole season before he starts crying about money. Yes he is good, but he isn't doing anything if e is hurt!

well, i'm not quite sure that, supposing that we do keep him, Lito should get a new contract. the thing is, in the next couple of years, the FO will have to do a LOT of resigning. Our best players' contracts are going to expire soon, i.e. B DAWK + Runyan + William(Tra) Thomas + LJ Smith 2008, Gocong + Gaither 2009, Westbrook + McNabb +Akers + Rocca + Bradley + Kolb 2010. so the Birds FO has to be carefull about throwing money around. and, there is a possibility of an uncapped 2011 season, meaning the best of the best will be up for grabs to whoever is offering BIG $$$. so i think the best thing to do with Lito is make him honor his current contract and sign an agreement that he will get an extension if he plays all 16 regular season games. otherwise, it stays the same.

i'm all for keeping lito...the only thing is i think he'd want the same,or near to the contract of samuel and with his injury prone history i dont know if that would be the best move for the eagles..i kno he's under contract but we all know he isnt happy..alot of $$$ for the cornerback position..maybe a contract with incentives?...BUT i wouldnt just give lito away for skittles either...would have to be a late 1st rounder or a player of equal quality that doesnt necessarily have to be a WR...if its one of those 2 doods,great..but i dnt want a joey galloway or anyone like that though....quick non related question? does anybody know more about how desean and rice hooked up..does he have a clinic for wr out there or does he just work out with certain ppl...just curious to know who else he has in the stable or if desean reached out to him...thanks

to answer your guestion re: jerry & desean

How did working out with Rice happen?

I'm signed with the DeBartolos so that's a team he was with. My agents just hooked me up with him and he came all the way out from San Francisco from Pensacola where I was training. Like I said it was a great opportunity for me to be able to work out with him. I worked out with him pretty often. Through this whole process I was definitely in the books with him, talking to him, just hanging out with him just trying to pick his mind and do the best things I could do and learn from him.

Everyday?

Everyday for a week and a half. I was very appreciative for him to come all the way out to Florida and put down everything he was doing and give me some key pointers.

He tell you about the hill he ran?

Yeah he did tell me about the hill. He said it takes about 15 minutes. He said he tried to get a lot of people out there to run that hill but not too many people make it through. Hopefully one day I'll get a chance to go work out on that hill.

Did he try to get you on it?

I'm not really training for hills right now. I'm training for my speed work and that 40 time. When I finally get ready to go to training camp and I need my endurance I'll probably go run that hill.

Agreed 100% CK...Awesome post and i hope they keep Lito, I really dont see him being any kind of a "team poison"...give him a lil something to keep him happy and lets go play some ball...

i hear u, i keep clicking my heels together, sayin there's no place like the linc, but i'm still home LOL!!!
soon....can't WAIT !! for sum football!!!!

They cannot and will not redo his contract. Personally I would love to see it, but all it would do is open the flood gates to other players who feel they deserve more, and lets be honest...most football players feel they are underpaid. In Lito's defense, I would love to just say "hey you signed the contract...honor it" but if the team doesn't have to honor their end....why should he? Hope you guys are ready for the NFL strike that we'll see in a short matter of time!

im not saying to re-do his enire contract. Players get ther contracts redone when going about it the right way. Lito is not TO and Andy said he will try to work something out with Lito. Giving him some peformance based in centives hurts NONONE involved. Will not re-do is your opinion, and "can not redo" is just not true.

thats really cool...thanks alot for answering my question...hopefully ppl understand that he's a game changing punt returner and not the answer to all of our wr cries...and IF i was the f.o i would redo bwest b4 i even entertained the thought of doing lito's over especially after we just signed samuel to crazy dollars...everyones not gonna be happy all the time and if my dad fed his family on 60k a year lito can feed his on 2milll....shut upppp and playyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I agree with you, but is it fair that he can be cut at any time and all he is guaranteed is his signing bonus? There is a huge double standard in the NFL in terms of contracts and shtttt is about to hit the fan.

if they can get an elite player go for it.....anything to help the team

yeah...i agree..i dont think its fair at all...footballs violent and anything can happen...BUT i also dont think ANY sport should have those long, guaranteed money contracts either...cuz owners can get screwed too...needs to be some kind of middle ground..something...and if this is an indication of how things turn out a few years later after these guys realize its not such a smart move, then we might end up like this with jamaal jackson, trent cole, and shawn andrews...MY opinion once again is that all these guys make wayyyyy tooo much anyway,BUT i'd take the money too so idk...all i want is a bonded team with a happy locker room with one common goal....PARADE DOWN BROAD AS SUPER BOWL CHAMPS!!!!!!!!

the owners agree with you on the fact that players get paid to much. In fact players get 60% percent of total revenue!! And Gene Upshaw calls the owners greedy...

i'm really not looking forward to the scabs playing...

idont get y they even thought about trading him. I doubt this will happen but they shud move Sheldon Brown to Saftey on most plays that we arent in the dime or nickel package n then i think we wud have one of the best secondaries EVER. Unless we can get an Amazing trade for Lito dont trade him. Its that simple

Because his contract is what it is and even if they kept him the starter he wouldn't be happy about it. In a fantasy world you're absolutely right...but we don't live in one. So really its not that simple.

Good Post I was going to bark it up, but I was at work so I didnt get a chance to. I say we keep him, there are too many good WR's in this league not to have a CB corps like we do.

just for argument/debate/fun sake....lets say 2morrow the eagles were offered straight up chad/roy for lito...no picks just straight up...would the eagles do it? should the eagles do it? what are your true fan opinions on that...without askin me if im nuts or crazy...and would the birds have gone after asante if lito was happy?...was it a health thing or money thing? and fyi i would want chads talent on the roster...not antics, cancer,or circus...they could keep him for that...and i wouldn't want a one year rental...wouldnt trade the possibility of an awesome secondary for 2004 all over again

I don't understand why the Philadelphia Eagles can not just keep him. It is against the better interest of the team to release a Pro-Bowl capable corner-back and receive mediocre compensation. There should have been a valid decision the second time the front office pronounced, "Lito is not going anywhere." and the initial procedures in rehabilitating the relationship between the Eagles front office's off-season moves, and Lito's role on the Philadelphia Eagles, should have been discussed immediately. The longer it takes for this issue to be dissolved, the harder it will be for all players on the team revert their attention to the season at hand.
This single handedly is the dilemma of the off-season. Although a number one wide receiver was desired, our game plan should have brought to issue an off-season balance of importance between addressing the wide receiver position passionately, or restoring the Eagle's once acclaimed secondary.
The truth is that no offer came through, and even when you look at Lito as a player, he deserves far better from an organization. He can do far more good on your team when he is happy, and it would be a discredit to the front office, to not make a player happy, and try to get rid of him. This all when in the future, it seems as though he is not going anywhere. We should take this as the opportunity to create a stronger defense, besides, defense wins championships.

another excellent set of replies!! thank u ~ i dig feedback that i can read and sink my teeth into, thank u guys!!!

i always wanted to keep lito!!! but we all know our team is cheap and has problem keeping it's talent happy!!!! i want to see lito stay with asante and sheldon!!!! it'll force teams to run and with bunkley and patterson in the in the middle and the linebackers we got i don't see that happening!!!! then soup boy and the o will only have to score 17 pts a game in order to win!!!

They're not cheap or they would have never signed guys like Asante and Kearse. They're extremely intelligent to sign guys when they are young to long term deals before their stock rises. Would you rather we be like the Deadskins? Yea that'd be smart!

You're absolutely correct, but to get the full benefit of this teams cannot re-work contracts for players who exceed expectations. If Lito stays here it should be under the terms of his current contract. That's not being cheap, it's being smart.

the ruth is all contracts should be kept..silent..just like at all our jobs..if u tell someone how much u make.and it happens to be more then that person will be cryin for more oney..all contracts need to be kept between the player and the Front Office..end of story..it would solve everything.

We don't play in a public forum, they do. Contracts should be made known to the people who buy the tickets and the merchandise which are used to fund the payroll. When they make a Tony Stark jersey you should have to report yours as well, but as things are currently thats a completely different situation isn't it? Athletes are held to the same rules that politicians and leaders of publicly held firms and should be for all intents and purposes.

ima season ticket holder and i dont care what they make to be honest...i just cannot stand there b!tching and complaining...y do u and i need to know..??...regardless of there payroll..if we didnt know what they made things would still be the same...i would still buy tickets and jerseys..ect..i do think that people should know what A job pays..but not individually..because look at all the turmoil it presents...i would love to know what these owners profit..we dont hear that though...i think that big buisiness' should report it..like gas stations..electric companies..stuff like that...and they do..exxon bankrolled like 52 billion this past year...i think there should be some type of stipulation revolving around player salary..jus my opinion

Well thats you...most people do care what they are making. We have a right to know since we are the ones contributing to it. Teams are privately owned yet still publicly held. You don't know what the owner's profit is? Google it bro...you can find out easily what a team brings in, what they spend on their players/capital/other personell/etc. Its free info to the public. Just curious, if Sprewell was your favorite player would you still buy his jersey after his "I can't feed my family" tirade knowing that he was making $14mill/season? We as individuals have little say or impact on the situation, but still have a right to know...simple as that.

on the sprewell thing...if he was my fav player or part of my squad it wouldnt matter to me..because even if he made a bill and he was my fav player or on my team i would still get it..i dont think its our right...if west through a tirade about i cant feed my family i would still have his jersey..cuz hes on my squad and one of my favs...i dont need to know exact numbers..i know they make millions and to me thats enough to know...screw the exact numbers..so if players salarys were kept private, business would be lost, or people would stop buying jerseys, or tickets to a game..no..we all would still do wghat we do and thats all those things...because its sports in america...lets worry about what our governmet is stealing from us more than what a player makes..sports would be much more positive to up and coming stars and better role models for younger kids...then some o the games would be played for what it is and not just to get a bigger paycheck than someone else...not sayn thats how all the players are ..but its starting to have a snowball effect..urlacher of all people to act the way he is is bull...he a better person than that..bet hey money is the root of all evil...

And that right there could be part of the problem. People will still shell out money for a player's jersey regardless of their character and simply for what they can do on the field. Money is the root of all evil and opening the wallet for a jersey is part of the vicious cycle.

One last example...Ryan Howard/Cole Hamels. Ryan made 900,000 last year and Coles making 500,000 this year I believe it is. Eaton's making 8,000,000. If Howard or Hamels had a gripe last year/this year about their contracts don't you think it would help to form an educated opinion if you knew the exact discrepancies? As an educated consumer I can assure you that I would want to know those things before I felt Cole was being selfish. Contracts and salaries are what they are and if I'm gonna go out and buy your jersey I want to know how much is going in your pocket as well as what kind of person you are; a key reason I never bought a T.O. jersey.

I like Lito he is a role model on and off... Despite all of these trade rumors... He is still going to go to camp... and will have no negative impact to the birds..either way

but not every player is like lito..

looking into the whole "buying a jersey" thing waay to deeply

jeez you can take those points and use them into almost ANY stuation that involves a erson buying a product. Its a jersey man, maybe your one of the 5 or so people who NEEDS to know exactly whose making what for each jersey sold, but the vast majority of people get the jerseys to represent their fav player or team... Highly doubt people besides you and a hand full of others really care about how each penny that is spent gets distributed ...have a good night/week....Florida here i COME.

Lito is a really good guy and a great player. Most of all he is young, and has a multiple pro bowl appearance in his young career. His contract was signed based on his past performances not what he is doing now. Now is Lito wrong for wanting a little more? No, Has he stopped being professional...no.....Philly is not going to give him away for nothing to avoid paying him...He will get his... If Philly does....It will cost them later....Karma does that sort of thing.
