The Dallas Cowboys cornerbacks -- Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins -- prevented Philadelphia wide receiver DeSean Jackson from hitting on his trademark big plays in Sunday's game. Punter Mat McBriar took Jackson out of his return game. Jackson returned only one of five punts, for nine yards. The other four punts testified to McBriar's growing skills at hang time and directional accuracy. Jackson took two fair catches and watched the other two punts go out of bounds, at the Eagles 18- and 21-yard lines. Of McBriar's last 27 punts, 17 have resulted in the opponent starting a possession inside its 20.

  • McBriar is a weapon we didn't have last year after the AZ game. The special teams are 100% better than they were last year and it's showing.

McBriar helps bottle up Jackson

IRVING - In addition to taking him out of the passing game, the Cowboys did a great job limiting DeSean Jackson's opportunities to make a game-breaking play returning punts. Mat McBriar punted five times, landing three inside the 20, with each kick high and coverable. Jackson only one back, gaining a meager 9 yards.

Costly mistake for Cowboys

Philadelphia owed its second score -- a 48-yard field goal by David Akers -- at least in part to a mistake on punt coverage by Cowboys linebacker Curtis Johnson. The Cowboys' possession ended with a Mat McBriar punt that was downed at the Philadelphia three. McBriar had to kick again because Johnson was called for going downfield too early for the seventh penalty of the season...

Newman blows it - twice

PHILADELPHIA - Cowboys CB Terence Newman just dropped an interception inside the Eagles 30. Making matters worse, he kicked the ball afterward, drawing a 5-yard delay of game penalty.

Credit Newman for back-to-back sacks

PHILADELPHIA - Keith Brooking and Jay Ratliff recorded back to back sacks, but the credit should really go to Terence Newman. Donovan McNabb was looking to get the ball to DeSean Jackson both times, but Newman had the speedster covered step for step. I predicted the Eagles would win that matchup, but so far Newman has the upperhand.

Plenty of game balls to go around

PHILADELPHIA - The first one goes to Cowboys CB Terence Newman, who completely took DeSean Jackson out of the game. Jackson had only two catches for 29 yards after entering the game with four TD receptions of 50-plus yards. In a performance reminiscent of his shut-down job on Carolina's Steve Smith in Week 3, Newman made four tackles and broke up one pass. He did give up an...

Philadelphia's Jackson can block, too

Philadelphia's DeSean Jackson has built a reputation as a big-play peformer for his work as a receiver and kick-returner. Jackson showed in the third quarter that he can block, too. Jackson had a key block on LeSean McCoy's 45-yard catch-and-run play in third quarter. Jackson tied up Cowboys' cornerback Terence Newman and would not let him get free. McCoy's big...

WitP: Owens, Bess, Elam, Sopoaga, McBriar

In his Montreal Alouettes debut, Chad Owens returned 2 kicks for an average of 40 yards, and had 1 catch for 10 yards.Davone Bess had 6 catches for 56 yards in the Dolphins loss to the Patriots.Jason Elam kicked 1 field goal for 33 yards as the Falcons beat the Redskins 31-17.Isaac Sopoaga had 3 tackles in the 49ers loss to the Titans. And Mat McBriar kicked 5 punts for a 42 yard...

Eagles have to settle for another field goal

PHILADELPHIA - The Eagles have only one TD this season on a drive that lasted 10 plays or more. On their last drive tonight, which lasted 12 plays, they had to settle for a 48-yard David Akers field goal, cutting the Cowboys lead to 7-6 with 1:38 left. With their explosive receivers shut down, the Eagles can't generate much offense other than an occasional solid gain by rookie...

Defense sets up points

Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb entered Sunday's play having thrown only one interception in 133 passes. The Cowboys doubled his total of interceptions in the first three quarters. Safety Gerald Sensabaugh picked off a deflected pass in the first quarter. Cornerback Mike Jenkins stole a throw in the third quarter. Each interception gave the Cowboys possession in Philadelphia...

Ware prevents touchdown

Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware did not have a sack in Sunday's win against Philadelphia, but his pass rush helped prevent a touchdown in the second quarter. Operating from the Cowboys 35, Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb tried to get a deep ball to wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who had pulled away from cornerback Mike Jenkins and safety Ken Hamin. Ware hit McNabb...

Cowboys' Spotlight: Mike Jenkins' Star Is Rising

Perhaps lost in the hysteria created by Miles Austin's meteoric rise; Romo's improved game management and the Cowboys' subsequent four game win streak, is a player on the defensive side of the ...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...

Wade Phillips deserves plenty of praise

IRVING - Why? Because his defense was, for the most part, outstanding last night in Philadelphia. The Eagles came into the game averaging nearly 30 points, but the Cowboys held them to just 16 with one touchdown thanks to four sacks (two by Jay Ratliff), two interceptions and two stops (Bradie James, Marcus Spears) on third-and-one and fourth-and-one in the fourth quarter. Phillips...

Injury Setbacks

Eight games into the 2008 season, injuries had already taken their toll on the Cowboys, with players such as Tony Romo, Felix Jones, Terence Newman and Kyle Kosier all missing considerable playing time.
