They lost one starter, at least temporarily, to injury and imported a veteran to compete for playing time. Finally, Dwayne Bowe may be back in coach Todd Haley’s good graces. Bowe took snaps with the starters during the last of Monday’s two practice sessions.

Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle shook off nearly 10 months of rust on Saturday night. He demonstrated he could take a hit. He showed he could still move around the pocket as well as move the pile on the quarterback sneak. And he calmly directed the 2-minute drive.

Dwayne Bowe’s spot in coach Todd Haley’s doghouse was firmly established Saturday night when the Chiefs came out with five wide receivers in the first quarter, and Bowe was on the sidelines wearing a white baseball cap. Bowe, who caught 86 passes last season, entered the preseason opener against Houston as a third-teamer, largely because his practice habits have irritated Haley.

Game one of the Pioli-Haley era is in the books, with numerous positives and negatives sure to surface after reviewing game tape.

There's nothing like playing the preseason opener in a driving rain that causes a lot of slipping and sliding and missed assignments. There was plenty of that on both sides, but less by the Houston Texans, who beat the Kansas City Chiefs 16-10 on Saturday night.
