Why not us!

I remember being at the training facility in Owings Mills, my rookie year, and feeling as if I were really blessed to have the honor of sharing a my NFL experience with the best athletes in the world. I also remember having the feeling of wanting show my teammates, coaches, and prove to myself that I was supposed to be there. You have to understand, I came from a small school, Howard University. Well known in academics, but small in respects of being an athletic powerhouse. I believe that it is not a right to play professional sports, but it is an honor. A honor that seems to have slipped the minds of some. I look back at some of the all-time greats who played the game, like Deacon Jones and John Randle, and wondered how would they would have dealt with the problems facing the game and communities. I wonder how the social issues that face our communities would be different if, we as professional athletes, would take a stand. A stance that would allow us to lead by example. But currently the example that we have been setting is a disturbing one. I don't know sometimes if I am looking at Sports show, or the Criminal Report of the Day. This is not the example that others have set for us to follow. Sure I can tell you about my day and what I did, but I would much rather share with you some "Food for Thought." And the thought of the day or the week is that we have to change. Change in a way that would allow others to come in and play the game the right way and function in their lives as productive members of society. Athletes used to be revered in the communities and across the world for how the lived their lives, not only during the hours of "the game" but also after the game. If there is one thing I love the most, it is Fall Afternoons playing 60 minutes against an opposing team. But I also love giving back to those same communities where our stadiums are located and residents can't even afford a ticket. What as athletes do we need to do to give back? And what rights do we have? And what as fans are you going to do to give back also.

Amen MD. The best thing you guys can do is continue to keep giving back and be that great example that people will look up to. Sport needs more people with your character. Never give up.

Thanks I really felt a need to start back writing so the fans can get the real scoop from a Veteran of the NFL.

All credit to you for doing that. Something I think soccer here in the UK is suffering from is that fans are feeling distanced from the players. They find it hard to associate - to see what they give back. We don't have anything like YardBarker where players can come in, express their own feelings and opinions. Anything we get to see is watered down by PR people and rarely comes straight from the player. This place is a great gateway in to a world that fans rarely get to see. Keep the posts coming and, if you get the chance, encourage others to do the same :-)

Marques, I feel like you're doing your part by writing this blog. Honestly, just writing that and bringing those issues to our attention helps put what we see on SportsCenter in perspective. Thanks man. Keep it up, and do what you can to show the world that not every pro athlete out there gets in trouble in their spare time.

thank you for your comments and please pass this along to others so they can respond

Its refreshing and inspiring to read your post, Thanks for reminding us that we all need to be human beings first and to treat others as we would want to be treated.

A lot of guys in the NFL are doing positive things we just have to say "no" to negative things and start putting the positive things out there more.

Great stuff, Marques. I wish you were still playing in Baltimore. As a Ravens fans, one of the things that I think has plagued the franchise is the fact that there are so many egos clashing in that locker room (and Billick eventually lost control). The league needs more players, like yourself, whose heads are screwed on straight. Guys who don't take for granted the privilege of playing in the NFL. As an undrafted free agent, to come as far as you have come, you should be proud of all you have accomplished... both on and off the field. Best of luck during your first season in Tampa Bay.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments.

There have been so many instances of athletes being arrested lately. It doesn't even phase us anymore. We make light of it, but in reality there are young kids that look up to those guys.
We definetly need more people leading by example.
I think that by living a good life & staying out of trouble is huge. Anything else is icing on the cake.

I recently got involved with an organization called the Princess Project. They provide prom dresses for anyone that can't afford one.
If any woman in your life has a gently used formal gown she can donate it to them or a similar organization. (this one is in the bay area but they are all over the country)

I feel like there are plenty of athletes who believe the same things that you do Marques, but I think sometimes people are overly cynical about their motivations. I commend you for recognizing your own ability to take a stand.

P.S. Thanks for your years in Baltimore.

Thank you. And others not only athletes need to take a stance on these issues.
