Will the Eagles be players in the off-season?

So here we are Eagles fans sitting at home not anticipating our Birds first playoff game for the 2007 season. Now instead we have sit back watch other teams attempt make history. As we await for the season to end and hope, prey and cross our fingers in hopes that Andy Reid and the rest of the front office opens their eyes and makes the moves that need to be made in order for us to win and get back to the Super bowl for the 2008 season.

It really is a shame, because we as Eagles fans have been waiting so damn long to see our team hoist that Vince Lombardi Trophy in victory. But it is even more a shame for the players of this team. Players such as Donovan McNabb, Jon Runyan and Brian Westbrook that have shed the blood sweat and tears their entire lives to become NFL stars. To only have their dreams of becoming Super Bowl Champions dashed because this team doesn't want to spend the amount of money it takes to become a top notch team like the Patriots or Colts do.

Now we fans saw a team go out in the off-season and do what they needed to do to become a championship caliber team again, despite what they did in the past. I am talking about the New England Patriots. We all know they've won the Super Bowl three times by barely spending any money at all. But they saw in the last few years that they have been coming up short in the playoffs. They attributed their losses to a need on defense so they went out in free agency and picked up the best player out there in Adalius Thomas. But their most glairing need was on offense in their wide receiver position. So what did they do? They only picked up Donte' Stallworth and traded for Wes Welker and All-World Receiver Randy Moss. See even though the Patriots were one of the best teams out there they weren't complacent with being 'one of' the best. They went out in the off-season and did what was necessary to become the best. See the patriots learned from the past seasons that the best way to win during the Season is to win in the off-season.

Now what have are Eagles done? Nothing near what they need to do to become a champion. They have continued to spend their cap money improperly and always shop in the Bargain Basement. Picking up players like Darren Howard, Montae Reagor and Will James along with countless other bottom-rung players over the years. Aside from the season where they grabbed Terrell Owens they've done nothing to make this team better. But Eagles fans this off-season must be the season. Because if it isn't then the Andy Reid era may never win a Super Bowl.

Many people have spoke about Donovan McNabb being dealt in the off-season. I personally do not see that happening. Unless The Vikings, Bears or some unnamed team blows them away with a trade. Now with that being said McNabb may not be traded or let go this upcoming season. But it will be his last season as the Eagles starting Quarterback. Because 2009 will begin the Kevin Kolb Era and the Eagles will begin their rebuilding process.

So that being the case they need to put all their chips in. They need to pick up the following pieces to get to the championship level. On Defense they need a Defensive end, a safety and cornerback who can return kicks as well as play the position. Now I think for it to be effective this season they'd need to pick up the defensive end via trade or free agency from a high-end source and not the bottom-rung. The rest of the defensive players (Safety & Cornerback) can be obtained through the draft.

Now on offense they need to go ahead and grab through free-agency or Trade for a receiver with break away speed that can get down the field. Chad Johnson would be my top choice but Bernard Berrian would work just as well. Just one of those guys to get down the field. Because if the Eagles do not have a receiver who can get down the field to catch the ball their offense just isn't as effective as we saw this season. Now as far as the Tight End position goes I do not think they need a tight end and some may think I am crazy. But I see Brent Celek becoming extremely good at that tight end position and may even become one of the better tight ends in the league in years to come.

Now if the Eagles just play hardball for once in the off-season and throw in all the chips, By strengthening the positions that I have stated here I believe that the Eagles will be back as not only the beasts of the East but of the entire NFC.

But the question always remains will they pay the price to be the best?

I agree with most of your points here, but I don't think next year will be McNabb's last in Eagles green. Look at Aaron Rodgers in GB. He's been waiting 4 years, and thats even after an awful year favre had last season. Now, McNabb is not Favre, but they are both and have always been franchise QB's. DMac's fate for 09 will be determined next season. If we go 12-4, you think they'll let him go? Of course not. If its another 8-8 season and the red zone O is again the issue, yes he may be.

But we all saw these last 3 marvelous weeks that the only true #5 is back. It took awhile, but he is back. With another whole off-season to train and get healthier, and yes, with some big free agency moves, we will be back as a #3 seed atleast. Look at the fact that the Eagles, Colts, Pats, and Cowboys were the only teams this year with top-10 Defense and Offense, and it is amazing the Birds are at home for january. Simply amazing. One less muffed punt in GB, or one less pick against NE or SEA, and we'd be going to TB this week.

As far as FREE agency WR, fuck that, there are no true big names. They need to trade for Chad or TJ ASAP, because now is the time to scoop one of them up. It may cost a #1-2 draft choice or a Trent Cole, but with the depth on defense, as we saw the past few weeks, its well worth it for the offense. B-West would have had 2500 yards if we had a real #1 WR this year.

Okay most of what you have said is pretty fair. But I have to say that the McNabb/Kolb Situation is a bit different from the Favre/Rodgers situation. First of all Favre has not been hurt nearly as much during his career as McNabb has been. And Favre is a for sure first ballad Hall-of-famer, not to say McNabb won't be one but Favre has made a name for himself with that team where he will say when he's done and Rodger starts. McNabb has not done the same here, so if Andy wants Kolb to start he will start.

And the reason I say McNabb will be gone is 09 isn't because of how he does or doesn't do in 08. I feel this team is getting old, there were talks of some of the offensive linemen retiring after this season. So surely they would even be more talks of it after 08. Dawkins for sure is heading that way. So I think they will go all this off-season to become a dominate team in 08 then begin rebuilding the next off-season. And if McNabb does do well in 08 I see that for more of a reason for this team to trade him to get better younger parts for this team in the long run. McNabb will be 33 o 34 in 09. And let's be honest this team has always been about the future and getting younger. And Andy would make sure McNabb would be going to a team

Which is why I say they need to go all out this season so that McNabb and Westbrook get there super bowl and if they don't win it in 08 then just maybe they'll hold on to the older guys for one more run. But I really see this team rebuilding very soon.

Now I see that you want Chad, As do I and that would be nice but realistically we'd have a better chance of getting Bernard Berrian who has the same type of quickness down the field and may not cost them as much and it wouldn't cost them as much in the process. I heard that Larry Fitzgerald may even be available to the Eagles that wouldn't cost you a top defensive player like Trent Cole.

I mean I am all about getting them a true number one wide receiver. But with the receiving core that we have now adding one more down-the-field player like Berrian or Fitzgerald would be more cost effective then grabbing Chad. I do agree those receivers wouldn't be nearly as entertaining as Ocho Cinco but you would keep your defense in tact.

Like I said I do believe we need that #1 receiver because our offense just isn't as effective without that quick strike ability like we had with Donte' Stallworth or T.O. but to make our offense better by trading away our best defensive commodity won't win us Championships.

Bernard Berrian will be UFA and is highly expendable now that the Bears have 2 TE with reliable hands, Hester making catches deep, and Muhamed.

we need a WR but trading trent cole would the stupidest way to go about aquiring one.

I completely agree, I believe we need another down-the-feild receiver for this pass first offense to work. But trading our best defensive player isn't the answer. In fact if we did that I believe we'd be taking a step back rather than a step forward.

you right about that , but we can daft a WR

Cannot trade cole that is out. Maybe William Thomas and a draft pick for Chad, TJ, or Steve Smith would be even better. Hell Lito has been hurt a lot too trade him for a receiver.

Maybe, but do you really believe those teams will want William Thomas plus a draft pick? Remember those teams are giving away their best player they'd want something of worth back in the process. Which is why I stated that Berrian or Fitzgerald would be more realistic of getting.

i heard a rumor that detroit would want lito and a 2nd or 3rd rounder for roy williams. that is something worth looking into...

That would be nice. But Williams has been hurt. So my question is would we inherit their old problem?

Trading Cole is not something i think is a muct, but it wouldnt exactly be a bad trade straight up for Chad Johnson. I'll take 25-30 pts/gm over a few extra sacks anyday. Plus there is alot of youth on D even without Cole, and signing a DE this off-season isn't as scarce as in years past.

But forget that, onto McNabb. I disagree that this team will look to re-build in 2008, and I truly think it is a year-to-year approach. You cant plan for 09 until you see what 08 brings. This is the NFL, NOT FOR LONG league as many say, and its true. McNabb's future hinges on 08 at this point. He did enough in December to earn that right.

The O-line you are right, they are getting up there. But Dawk will be back for his final year.

I would love to see a guy like Larry Fitz come to Philly because he quietly goes about his biz.. unlike a diff WR we got in 2004. And you know what, Chad may be a bad idea for that matter too, because of his ego. Philly aint Cincy.

Berrian is good yeah, but its still a second-tier guy to me. Fitz, Williams, Chad, all game-breakers every week. Berrian is a "maybe this week guy". With Curtis, Brown, and Avant, you dont need a Berrian, you need a bonified #1.

And we could get those points if we signed a WR whose just as good but not as high profile. People get carried away when they hear the name "Chad Johnson" possibly becoming an Eagle. Let's be honest he's not coming here because the birds brass see him as a T.O. type of player. So they simply will not take that risk.

And I would rather not have a chad johnson if we'd have to give up one of our top defense players. Defense wins championships after all. Look at the colts last season, sure they have two number one receivers in Wayne and Harrison. But they never would have got through the playoffs if their defense doesn't step up. Same goes for the Patriots, they need this bye week because their defense is letting too many teams in games where they do not belong. If you're defense is damaged their is nothing your offense can do to counter that.

If you think back to 2004, T.O wasn't the big reason we got to the super bowl. A lot of it had to do with our defense. That is why I say if we can keep the defense as is and perhaps sign a few defensive players along with a quick, good handed receiver like a Roy Williams or Berrian we'd be just as good as if we signed Chad Johnson. We may even be better cause Berrian and Williams have had really bad QB's throwing to them. There is no telling how good they'd become if McNabb was throwing to them.

But from what I hear the birds have and a lot of draft picks this draft. So if they can get away with trading just draft picks for a chad johnson or fitzgerald I would love it! But I really doubt it because of how the owner feels about players who act in the way T.O. does. I don't see Chad causing those problems if he became an Eagle but I just don't think they'll take the chance.

First sentence- "must", not "muct"

I agree D wins championships, but its alot easier to play defense with a lead. The 2004 had a lead 80% of the time because of TO's TD's, and how he opened up the offense.

Amen on the Chad thing, I'd actually rather have Fitz. He's my new top choice after much thought and opinions on here.

But the NFC has grown much, much tougher since 2004. So you'd need that defense to remain the way it is plus the receiver to win.

I keep hearing that Fitz may be a better chance of coming hear then Chad. But it is more likely that we'll end up getting Berrian or Javon Walker.

don't trade trent, because he just coming off career year. but we need a WR .why not daft a WR

Ocho Cinco for president!!!! Don't you guys get that same feeling in your stomach when "the player" was coming to town. You just knew that good things were going to happen. I feel the same way with 85 but it's even better because he's a personality not a distraction. The face of the Eagles (Mcnabb and Reid) are boring. we need excitment in Philly someone to represent the fans. I say do whatever it takes to get him because the defense is on the rise with Bradley in the middle and then Spikes and "Gay"ther(i hate him cuz he replaced trotter- i'm dealing with it) flanking and of course new secondary the final piece needed would be on offense. bringchad2philly.com

#85 in eagle green!!i agree with you as a personality is a good thing ..i do remember the energy when the player came to town and i hope we feel it again and soon..

man that would be so sweet if we get chad .............curctis,brown,smith,chad,west,d-mac omg super bowl in 08 baby well i just hope the eagles make a move on chad and do there best on bringing him to philly baby
