Welcome back boys!

Leroy Hill was selected in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks. That draft seems so long ago, the team plays a completely different style of football today, yet somehow Leroy Hill manages to hold on to the team despite his love affair with Mary Jane.

The reason? Because when he is out on the field he is a decent linebacker who’s off the field troubles have allowed the Seahawks to keep him playing on one year deals at very little risk to the team.

If he could stay healthy (last season was his first 16 game season of his career) and stay out of trouble his play on the field would command a multi-year deal easily paying him 3 times what the Seahawks have been able to keep him for.

Adding LeRoy Hill gives the team option heading into the draft on April 26th.

had the Seahawks headed into the draft later this month without signing Hill they would have had to seriously consider filling their need at outside linebacker early in the draft, sooner then they would like to perhaps.

As I have said before when a team gives itself options it avoids the panic stage and ultimately making a big mistake by over valuing a player based on team needs.

The Seahawks could easily go into the 2012 season with Leroy Hill starting or if the right situation fell into their lap they could draft a replacement and have Hill adding depth to the team.

Hill’s latest arrest for drug possession did not end with any formal charges so I doubt there will be any suspension from the league associated with it.

The Seattle Seahawks also re-signed linebacker/special teamer Matt McCoy to a one year deal on Thursday.

This is a move that adds to the special teams unit more then the linebacker position.

The Seahawks continue to make moves to help bolster the special teams unit that was ranked in the bottom half of the league last season. Special teams add a lot of hidden yards and can be a significant reason a team wins or loses a game (i.e. the game down in San Francisco last season).

The recent moves suggest Pete Carroll and John Schneider agree that the unit is important to the success of the team.

Matt McCoy has proven he can fill in at middle linebacker and do a decent job in spot duty so his re-signing gives the team valuable depth at the position as well.

The Seahawks front office continues to make moves that are financially sound and they keep giving the team options moving forward.

I could not be more excited to see the type of players the Seahawks add in the draft.

At this point I would have to say the Seahawks are leaning hard towards one of the pass rush defensive ends or David Decastro with the first round pick.

Stay tuned to NWSB Seahawks blog as we approach the 2012 NFL Draft. There’s another mock draft right around the corner.
