Mason, you're out. Kerley, you're in. Love. It.

If you're just waking up Jets fans, you've probably heard the news. The green-and-white have jettisoned Derrick Mason to Houston for a conditional draft pick. I won't sugar coat and play revisionist history. Here's how we translate the news.

1. Failed Experiment: We took a shot on Mason. Swing and a miss. Fine. I thought it was a sensible pick-up, and he'd be a good, productive safety blanket for Sanchez. It didn't happen. Thirteen catches in five games wasn't the vision.

2. Message Sent: Yes, I'm going to spin it like others surely will. This may end up being as much a "mental" play as a personnel move. Mason was ********. He wasn't picking up the offense in his half weeks of practice. He and Rex had a "private conversation" of which the details were not divulged. Let's just say they may not have been seeing eye to eye. Or they were and Mason wanted out. Wish granted.

3. Vanilla Smooooove: Jets fans have been gaga over Kerley since training camp. Wes Welker comparisons galore. Dangerous in slot. Electrifying on returns. Blah, blah. Well, guess what? He's actually looked pretty decent. So, why not see if he really can play that slot. We're swapping 15 years of experience for a rookie. But we're also trading out a 37 year-old malcontent for a hungry-as-hell 22 year old. Remember this?

4. Paper Thin: Make no bones now. If Kerley gets hurt, the Jets are more f-ed than they already may be. Behind Kerley is Patrick Turner and a whole lotta nobody. Although congratulations to Michael Campbell, you should thank Mason for getting you back on the practice squad. Speaking of which, next time you lose the helmet, kid, stay down. As for addressing our depth (or lack thereof) at the receiver position....

5. Shut Up, Fans: I'm talking to all of you moronic Jets fans who are screaming "Moss!" "T.O.!" These are people whose sanity I seriously question. Let's take an offense that is already struggling to define itself and develop any sort of chemistry between quarterback and pass catchers and throw a huge, new personality with zero experience in the system into the mix. Better yet, let's find some folks who are notoriously cancerous in the locker room! Yay, good idea!

So, what does today's trade mean at the end of the day? It's a chance for a rookie to shine. A moment to remind the team that everybody needs to be rowing in the same direction and producing or things can change. In the end, it means nothing if Schotty and the offense can't get going. I'll be in the stands on Monday night. The Jets need a win, yes. And while style points don't show in the standings, they need to dominate the Dolphins. The season's tide has to turn now or...
