Dallas Cowboys FS Alan Ball is the leading candidate to start at free safety this season, according to Carlos Mendez, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, however, there is some concern as to how well he can tackle at the position. "His tackling and stuff, in the ballgames, because of his size, is really the only drawback on him," head coach Wade Phillips said. "I think he's going to be a really good free safety-type guy.
