Those on hand for the highly anticipated duel between Alex Tanney and the recently signed Caleb Hanie left feeling that the YouTube video sensation threw “sharper” and “crisper” passes. The duo is sharing first-team reps this week as Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell wait to get cleared for practice having suffered concussions within the recent weeks. During his press conference, Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski stated that while both players were progressing, he could not name a quarterback for Sunday’s contest against the New England Patriots. “We can wait until Friday or all the way up to game day [to name a starter], if we have to,” Chudzinski said. “I think we’ll get a better sense, though, as we get into practice and as those guys are getting the reps. We can go either direction once we get into that and once we get a feeling for one way or another. I’d like to see more of them and see them actually doing and going through the course of the game plan this week.” The 26-year-old Tanney also displayed better footwork in practice, but it is the 28-year-old Hanie who has more experience as a passer in the NFL, having four regular season starts for the Chicago Bears on his résumé. Both players have experience within the Browns current style of offense as Hanie learned under Mike Martz in Chicago and the Cowboys reportedly use a form of Norv Turner’s old offense back when the current Browns offensive coordinator was in Dallas. “Obviously, if you’re in this league, you want to play,” said Tanney, who completed 54.8 percent of his passes for 423 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions through five preseason games with the Cowboys. “I’m preparing like I have been my entire life. I’m not sure it’s going to happen, but I’ll be ready if they call on me.” [Related: Cleveland Browns Film Room: Screens, screens and more screens]
