The Cowboys' punt returners, Patrick Crayton and Terence Newman, struggled on Sunday. Crayton muffed one punt out of bounds, which technically was a sound play because he saved yards on a punt, and fumbled another. Newman inexplicably let a punt hit the ground and the Cowboys had to start a drive from their 3. San Francisco cut Allen Rossum to make room for Michael Crabtree, making him available. He is in his 12th year and was averaging 7 yards per punt return and 21.7 yards per kick return. Those numbers are hardly staggering but he has eight returns for scores in his career. Here's an issue of adding Rossum - he plays only one spot. The Cowboys are already carrying two kickers, a third quarterback and a longsnapper on the roster. Adding another one-position player to the roster is difficult.
