The fact that we have the term “Andrew Luck Sweepstakes” speaks volumes to the kid’s potential as an NFL quarterback.

Luck  has all the tools – the arm, the size, the accuracy, the smarts, Steve Young like mobility – and he can apparently catch the ball too. There are only a handful of teams that would willingly pass on Andrew Luck, and probably none that wouldn’t think twice about such a thing.

So where do the Chiefs fit into the Luck Sweepstakes?

At the begin of the season, they appeared to be the front runner. They got pummeled by the Bill and the Lions.

But then they hung in with the Chargers. Todd Haley wouldn’t dare admit, but it was a moral victory for Kansas City.

The next two weeks, the Chiefs didn’t look like the worst team in the league any more, picking up back to back wins over the Vikings and Colts. Sure, neither win was pretty – they barely squeaked by Minnesota, and made Curtis Painter look like a pro-bowler. But the end result was still two victories.

It’s hard to imagine the thought of being the league’s worst just to get Luck hasn’t passed the minds of a dozen or so coaches. But it’s also hard to imagine that a coach would actually make an effort to be the worst. Even if he did, he’d never say it obviously.

John Fox is doing a good job of doing a bad job, as the Broncos look to be no better than a three-win team this year. The Dolphins are looking like a contender for the number one draft spot as well. Something’s gotta give this week when the two meet.

So do the Chiefs have a shot at landing Luck?

They have three winnable games left – two against Denver and one against Miami. But with the 6th-ranked rushing attack in the NFL, Kansas City can contend in more games than you might think.

My money is still on a five-win season for the Chiefs.

Even so, I’ve seen fight in the Chiefs. The players haven’t given up, because there is still some pride in the game. Has Todd Haley given up? Not a chance. The idea of a draft sweepstakes probably makes a guy like Haley grind his teeth at night.

In terms of the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes, the Chiefs don’t want him. They’d rather have a full effort and the second overall pick than to give up and land Luck.

For a team like this, the season is played one week at a time, and one year at a time.

So stop worrying about Andrew Luck Chiefs fans – your team and coach don’t want him and you won’t be getting him.
