Andy Reid has brought winning back to Kansas City but it comes at a cost For years as an avid NFL fan I casually watched the Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles teams. For the first time this past Sunday I got a view of the issue that many Eagles fans had with Reid. It became clear to me that Reid will win the Chiefs a lot of games, but he will cost them some wins as well. Exhibits A and B The first incident of Reid’s frustrating decision making came early in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs had a fourth and goal from the Houston one yard line. Reid decided to forego a chip shot field goal that would have put Kansas City up by four points. Alex Smith was unable to complete the pass and Kansas City turned the ball over on downs clinging to a one point lead. The second incident came right after the two minute warning in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs still had the one point lead and the ball third and four with the Texans out of timeouts. Reid chose to put the ball in the air which resulted in an incompletion and the clock stopping. Fortunately for Kansas City, Tamba Hali executed a sack fumble which Derrick Johnson recovered. Reid’s decisions prolonged this game twice and gave the Texans opportunities to win the game that the Chiefs’ play on the field didn’t warrant. Instead of forcing Houston to score another touchdown against the stellar Kansas City defense at home, his decision resulted in the Texans simply needing to get into field goal range to take a lead. As opposed to giving the ball on third and medium to Jamaal Charles against one of the league’s worst run defenses and keeping the clock running, Reid’s decision gave Houston an extra forty seconds at the end of the game to work with. Thanks to Hali and Johnson, it didn’t matter. Wherever you go, there you are When the Chiefs hired Reid, they should have known this is what they were getting. It’s hard to criticize the results. No NFL team has ever started out a season 7-0 a year after having the worst record in the league before. Follow isportsweb on twitter A change in geography wasn’t going to change Reid that much. Just like he did in Philadelphia, Reid in Kansas City will at times demonstrate a complete disregard for the situation of the game his team is in and the talent he has to utilize. Instead, he will stick to what he wants to do and pray his team executes the plan. What Eagles fans complained about during Reid’s tenure there was his trying to adjust the game situation to his plan rather than adjusting his game plan to the situation. It happened this past Sunday and the defense was able to overcome it. Next time the Chiefs may not get the sack fumble. Read more here
