A tough question becomes simple with one small nod from the team doctors. When the Detroit Lions’ medical crew gives running back Jahvid Best that nod, their backfield issues disappear.
But that just won’t happen soon. With the ever-increasing concussion crackdown in the NFL, Best’s third such injury may be a death sentence.
With Best not cleared to play, and no timetable set for his return, a void has appeared in the Lions’ backfield.
The void is apparent, but who will fill it is unclear. Veteran Kevin Smith gave the Lions some good reps as the first back last year, but I doubt his ability to stay full speed for 16 games.
If Leshoure lives up to expectations, the Lions have a solid 1-2 punch
Smith has been nicked up in the past, and the Lions will need other players to be in the picture in order to run the ball effectively.
Second-year player Mikel Leshoure sits in the same oft-injured category as Smith. Leshoure missed his entire rookie season to an Achilles injury, and now si...

ALLEN PARK, Mich. What you see on Sundays with Calvin Johnson is the finished product the superstar receiver for the Detroit Lions, a 6-foot-5, 236-pound beast with the nickname of Megatron.

In an era of diva receivers throughout the NFL, Johnson remains a coachs...
This isn't a recording: the Lions could soon be in the market for help at running back with injuries piling up at that position for the third consecutive year. Stephon Green injured his knee in Monday's practice and joined the team's top two tailbacks -- Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure -- on the sideline. That leaves only veteran Kevin Smith, who slimmed down and appears...
On this weeks edition of Lions LIVE (episode 4), Downtown and Adam give an update on the happenings at Lions training camp. They also discuss Avril signing his franchise tender and ending his holdout, what kind of effect Ryan Broyles will have on the offense going forward and what Jahvid Best’s fate will be this season.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- His injuries took him out. Injuries to others have put him back in.
That's the ironic reality of running back Kevin Smith's career with the Detroit Lions.
A year ago at this time, Smith couldn't even find a NFL team that would invite him to training camp.
"I was trying any way to get on a team, any team," Smith said. "I needed a...
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The last thing the Detroit Lions need right now is another prolonged controversy.
Defensive end Cliff Avril put an end to that possibility Sunday morning when he reported to training camp after signing his 10.6-million franchise tender for this season.
Avril missed the first week of camp, which isn't ideal but wasn't that big of an issue. He made a...
Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril reported to training camp on August 5, ending a 9-day holdout. After a breakout 11-sack season last year, Avril came into the offseason looking to be paid like a Pro Bowler on a long-term deal. The Lions had other plans, sticking him with the one-year franchise tag.
Like many players tagged this year, Avril refused to immediately sign his...
Did you know that the Detroit Lions used to hold training camp in Portsmouth, Ohio? That’s where the team went each summer from 1929-1933 to get in game shape. Now, players make a short drive from their homes to the team facility in Allen Park, which sits in a business park featuring numerous Ford offices. The tallest building in the park is the indoor practice facility.
Fred Matua, a 2006 seventh-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions, has died at the age of 28.
Several of Matua’s former teammates posted messages on Twitter last week indicating that Matua had been hospitalized as a result of either a heart attack or an aneurysm. Although Matua needed emergency surgery, the news initially appeared to be positive, as some of his teammates wrote that...
Detroit Lions DE Cliff Avril has ended his holdout and reported to training camp today. He signed his $10.6 million tender and passed his physical.
Avril tweeted this morning, "If ur heart is filled with faith then you can't fear"... back to work let's get it #WIN."
Apparently, Avril decided it's just been too long of an absence from camp, and with...
Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril has ended his hold out and reported to training camp, according to Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com.
Avril has held out for a new contract, but he’ll have to wait until the end of the regular season, since both sides couldn’t agree on anything before the mid-July deadline.
Avril himself confirmed on the Twitter that he was headed...
The Detroit Lions sure are cute. I've raved about their awesome wide receiver Calvin Johnson, the boner-inducing defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, and have been jealous of their metal music listening head coach in Jim Schwartz. In comparison, I bet Leslie Frazier listens to the Charmels before a game starts. I mean, they're fine and all, but ... Before a game? You're not...
