Yesterday I speculated that the 49ers could be a candidate to trade up for the No. 1 pick in an effort to land Blaine Gabbert. Another team in the mix to move up No. 1 is the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cardinals have made their interest in Gabbert very clear, and I believe there is a 99% chance they would select Gabbert if he falls to No. 5.

However, I also believe there is a slim chance that he gets past the Panthers, Bills and Bengals. In order to land Gabbert, they may need to move up, and the only safe way to assure he’s on the board they would be to move to No. 1.

If the Cardinals want Gabbert enough they could potentially put together a package that may convince the Panthers to part with the top pick.

As long as the lockout continues the only thing that can be traded on draft day are 2011 draft picks, which makes trading tricky. If the Panthers want to trade down it will be almost impossible for them to recoup the 3,000 points that the 1st overall pick is worth according to the trade value chart. However, a package of the Cardinals 1st, 2nd and 4th round picks would equal 2,355 points and would give the Panthers seven of the first 103 picks in the draft.

If the Cardinals are serious about Gabbert this trade may make too much sense not to happen. The Panthers need to stockpile draft picks more than they need to roll the dice on a quarterback, and the Cardinals need a franchise quarterback.

Should the Cardinals trade up to No.1 for Gabbert?
