No NFL team has ever played in a Super Bowl in their own stadium. That trend will obviously continue this winter with the Indianapolis Colts. However, the Arizona Cardinals will get a chance in 2015.
League owners awarded the 2015 Super Bowl to Glendale, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. They beat out Tampa Bay, the only other candidate. This will be the third time the Phoenix area has hosted the game.
“We are thrilled to be back in Arizona,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “I will say it was a difficult choice.”
According to the AP:
Phoenix won on the second ballot, prompting screams of joy from the Arizona committee.
“Everyone pulled together throughout the Phoenix area to put together a terrific package we were able to present to the owners,” Arizona Cardinals President Michael Bidwill said. “We are delighted.”
