Besides the strong Atlanta Braves, there’s not much hotter in Atlanta these days than Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. The former first round draft pick was signed to a five-year, $103.75 million contract extension with $59 million in guaranteed money, as per a league source.
This bank-breaker deal makes Ryan the second-highest paid player in the league, averaging about $20.75 million annually. He sits just behind Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers who makes about $22 million a year.
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco who entered the NFL in the same draft class as Ryan, has a six-year, $120.6 million contract with about $20.1 earning per year, which also includes a three-year payout of $62 million.
While Matt Ryan has not taken his team to a Super Bowl yet unlike his draft class competition in the AFC, what he has accomplished for the Falcons deserves praise and indeed, a big money contract. I feel it’s only a matter of time before Matty Ice gives the Falcons franchise exactly what they are paying for. He’ll need the Lombardi trophy if he wants to continue to be compared closely to Joe Cool in Baltimore.
