Beware, adjective overload to follow shortly. The St. Louis Rams played one of their most inspired, passionate, hard-nosed games fans have seen in a while in Motown this past Sunday. The final two minutes not withstanding. However, the defense of the St. Louis Rams made a statement that should not be ignored .  The defense was in midseason form against Detroit. This is a unit that I believe was the best thing about this team headed into the opener. Even without coordinator Gregg Williams on the sideline, I was confident about this group because of their combination of mental toughness and speed in the secondary.  All in all this was a statement game for St. Louis, and they came to play. Defense was the name of the game throughout, especially in the third quarter. Only three points were scored, and the St. Louis secondary shut down Stafford on a few key third downs.  Rookie cornerback and steal of the draft, Janoris Jenkins set the tone in the first quarter. I...

Detroit Lions sneak past Rams

Despite quarterback Matthew Stafford having one of his worst career games, the Detroit Lions were able to escape week one with a 27-23 victory. St. Louis kicked the go-ahead field goal just inside the two-minute warning, but Stafford and the Lions drove down the field and regained the lead when Kevin Smith took a Stafford pass to pay dirt with just 10 seconds left. After throwing...

Juan Eye On: Matt Stafford

I hope you don’t have a GIF of my flying fist pump Juan… Matt Stafford was my #1 ranked QB this week.  Talk about a swing and a miss.  Stafford waited 59:50 to throw his first TD pass and although it was game winner for the Lions, it was a disaster of a day for his fantasy owners.  He thew 3 INTs that looked like a rookie would have thrown.  He came close to throwing 4 plus...

Lions 27, Rams 23

DETROIT -- Matt Stafford looked shaky in the first half but poised when the Detroit Lions needed him most. Stafford's 5-yard touchdown to running back Kevin Smith with 10 seconds remaining gave the Lions a 27-23 opening-day victory over the St. Louis Rams at Ford Field Sunday. With Leather’s Watch This: Oh Sweet Irony!

Watching Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Stafford poop the bed against the St. Louis Rams yesterday was rather bothersome for me, as I spent a quarter of my auction league cash on his three-pick-throwing ass a week ago. But then I remembered the above commercial for Monday Night Football and the irony tickled me enough to make me forget that he almost cost me my suicide pick, too...

St Louis Rams: Valiant Effort Falls Short vs. Lions

The St. Louis Rams put up a hard fight during the season opener to the Lions. The game even started off with a field goal kick by the rookie Greg Zurelein who had a total of three field goals. During the second quarter corner back Cortland Finnegan intercepted Matthew Stafford for a touchdown taking the Rams to halftime with a one point lead.Roger Saffold was injured during the fourth...

St. Louis Rams vs. Detroit Lions: Hero and Zero of the Game

As I watched the Detroit Lions defeat the St. Louis Rams 27-23 I was all prepared to declare Cortland Finnegan the hero in a Rams win and Matthew Stafford as the goat having thrown three first half interceptions. All that changed with :10 left in the game. While Finnegan should still be considered a hero, leading St. Louis in tackles, seemingly always around the ball, and an interception...

Rams play Lions tough but fall 27-23 in opener

Jeff Fisher hoped his St. Louis Rams could hold Detroit's powerful offense to field goals. They did a pretty good job of that - until the final quarter. Matthew Stafford threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Smith with 10 seconds left, lifting the Lions to a 27-23 victory over the Rams on Sunday. St. Louis intercepted Stafford three times in the first half - returning one...

Detroit Lions Earn A Ugly Win, Start 2012 1-0

Conventional Wisdom says a win is a win, and it sure is a lot better to be 1-0 than 0-1, but should all us Detroit Lions fans feel real good about the 27-23 victory over the St. Louis Rams? Before we go any farther our hearts and prayers go out to Rodger Saffold. We certainly hope it is not as bad as it looked. Rest, heal, and get back on the field brother. On the surface Matthew...

Random Thoughts from the first week of real NFL action

The NFL goes to great lengths to ensure supremacy of its product.  One thing they can’t control, however, is whether their games are exciting, so the league had to be thrilled with the plethora of late great finishes in week one.   The Eagles went on a late 90 yard TD drive to beat the Browns.  The Niners held off Aaron Rodgers in the two minute drill to preserve a win...
