The Chicago Bears are making left tackle a major free-agent focus.
A source told FOXSports.com that Miami's Jake Long and New Orleans' Jermon Bushrod are atop the team's wish list when the free-agent signing period begins at 4 p.m. ET.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, Long reached the Pro Bowls during each of his first four seasons in Miami. But a lengthy injury history and high contract demands prompted the Dolphins to use their franchise tag on defensive tackle Randy Starks and let the 27-year-old Long hit free agency even with ample salary cap space available.
Bushrod, 28, reached the Pro Bowl the past two seasons as the blindside protector of quarterback Drew Brees. And while Bushrod recently told me and co-host Gil Brandt on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he preferred to play for a warm-weather team, there is a natural link to the Bears. Aaron Kromer, who was Bushrod's offensive line coach in New Orleans, is Chicago's new offensive coordinator.
The Saints are working to re-sign Bushrod but may not have the cap space to keep him in the fold.
Left tackle has proven an ongoing issue for the Bears as quarterback Jay Cutler has taken a beating behind a porous offensive line. J'Marcus Webb started all 16 games at the position in 2012.
BEST OF MAXIM
Former number one pick Jake Long has found a new home, and will now anchor the offensive line for the Saint Louis Rams. After his now former team, the Miami Dolphins, signed wide receiver Mike Wallace to a very lucrative deal, it became very likely Long now fell out of their price range.
However, the Dolphins loss is the Rams gain, as Long is seen as one of the premier offensive...
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk confirms that free agent OT Jake Long will visit with the Rams tonight and also has interest from the Eagles and the Dolphins.

Mike Garafolo tweets that the Bears and Rams are ”believed to be among the most interested” teams in free agent OT Jake Long.

With so many available options at offensive tackle this year, it’s going to be hard for Long to walk away with a huge contract. Teams can always wait for the asking price to...

Sean Jenson reports that Bushrod’s deal is a five-year agreement.

Jermon Bushrod was someone I felt would get overpaid and sure enough he did. Bushrod may be a two-time Pro-Bowler, but that’s more to the credit of Drew Brees’ quick release and pocket presence and the how overall uneducated the Pro-Bowl voting public is. Bushrod may have two Pro-Bowl appearances, but has never been close to being voted an All-Pro by the writers, who tend to...
The Chicago Bears made a bold statement on the first day of free agency addressing two major needs on the offensive side of the ball. Chicago signed left tackle Jermon Bushrod and tight end Martellus Bennett. Both are significant upgrades to the same positions for the Bears and should help the play of quarterback Jay Cutler tremendously.
Bushrod, formerly of the New Orleans Saints...
MIAMI The Miami Dolphins, irrelevant for so long, are continuing to remind people theyre still in the NFL.

But before everybody starts talking about not when the Dolphins next...
