Best and worst NFL betting teams through nine weeks

With more teams than usual on a bye, a few of the highlighted teams from last week remain on this list. Below are the best and worst NFL betting teams against the spread (ATS) and against the over/under. We have four games of interest that put a betting trend to the test.
Last week's lone highlighted game of interest was the Bucs-Rams, and it easily went under as we suggested it might.

Best teams: ATS

  1. Tennessee Titans (6-2)
  2. Dallas Cowboys (6-2)
  3. New York Giants (6-2)
  4. Atlanta Falcons (6-3)
  5. Seattle Seahawks (6-3)
  6. New York Jets (6-3)
  7. Cincinnati Bengals (6-3)

The Titans surprisingly forced the Chiefs to overtime on Sunday night and have moved into a tie for the best ATS record at 6-2. Both the Cowboys and Giants were on a bye last week and remain some of the best betting teams in football.

Since starting 6-0 ATS, the Falcons have dropped three straight against the spread and are in danger of falling off this list entirely.

The Seahawks and Jets are both 6-3 overall and ATS and two of the most surprising teams this season. Their performance had graduated from flukiness into legitimacy.

Worst teams: ATS

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-6-1)
  2. Los Angeles Rams (2-5-1)
  3. Carolina Panthers (3-6)
  4. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-6)
  5. Green Bay Packers (3-6)
  6. Indianapolis Colts (3-6)
  7. New Orleans Saints (3-6)

That Bucs-Rams game was one of the worst we've seen in some time on Sunday, neither of these teams is going anywhere this season. Even with the win, Tampa Bay is still the worst team against the spread at 2-6-1.

We have five teams all 3-6 ATS, and the Colts were the first time to fire their coach this season as they've fallen to 3-5-1. Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers look like their season may be over after losing to the Lions and falling to 3-6.

Best teams: Overs

  1. Cleveland Browns (5-2-1)
  2. Philadelphia Eagles (5-3)
  3. Detroit Lions (5-3)

Only three teams are two or more games above .500 when it comes to going over. Out of 32, this is a shocking minority, bringing home the point that once again you need to be exploring betting the under if you wager on the NFL.

Sportsbooks are cleaning up on bettors who bet on points and the over. Unders have been the far more profitable path this season.

Best teams: Unders

  1. Indianapolis Colts (8-1)
  2. Denver Broncos (7-1)
  3. Buffalo Bills (7-1)
  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-2)
  5. Tennessee Titans (6-2)
  6. New York Giants (6-2)
  7. Los Angeles Rams (6-2)

It's a remarkable under run for the Colts this season, now 8-1. Denver and Buffalo both have also hit the over just once. Whether it's defenses stepping up or offenses not living up to expectations, it's intriguing to see seven teams going under at a 75% rate or better.

Week 10 Games of Interest

Atlanta Falcons (-3) @ Carolina Panthers — Atlanta is still here because of their hot start, but as alluded to above, they've failed to cover a spread in three straight games. Is Thursday night the remedy against a Panthers team 3-6 ATS? After watching what Joe Mixon just did to Carolina on the ground, this Atlanta run game should be in a good spot to capitalize.

Seattle Seahawks (+2.5) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — The London game this weekend will be between the exciting and fun Seahawks and the disappointing and boring Buccaneers. Our early thoughts are let's back Seattle here, getting 2.5 points in what won't be a true road game in England.

Denver Broncos @ Tennessee Titans (38.5 points) — Two teams that have gone under in a combined 13 of 16 games this season, and the betting market has taken notice. This is the lowest total of Week 10 and the only game total set under 40 points.

Dallas Cowboys (-5) @ Green Bay Packers — How many times can it be a must-win situation for Green Bay? The urgency may have passed and this team just might not be that good. The Dallas defense, rested off a bye, should be able to slow down the Packers. Green Bay being 5-point home underdogs is not something many would have expected before this year began.
