Any hopes of DE Jonathan Fanene being able to contribute this season looked to have been dashed when he injured his knee early in training camp, and hadn't been able to recover from it. It's a tough break for the player and the team because he's a tough SOB that would've fit quite well in the Patriots rotation.

"Just didn't work out," head coach Bill Belichick said at his Tuesday afternoon conference call. As usual, that's all you're gonna get from Bill.

The Patriots announced Tuesday that they're releasing him and two others, Kyle Hill and Chris Koepplin. Fanene, who played the previous 7 seasons in Cincinnati, was a highly regarded free agent back in March when the Patriots signed him to a 3-year deal, including a nice $3.85 million signing bonus, which now becomes a pretty nice parting gift for the 30-year old.

From a finanical standpoint, the release saves $900,000 and a little cap space this season, but will add over $2.5 million to their 2013 cap.

Fanene's injury in camp led to increased playing time for Chandler Jones, Jermaine Cunningham, Brandon Deaderick and Ron Brace, which be a good thing going forward, especially for the rookie Jones, who has impressed the team in camp and in their two preseason games.
